Rising above the devastating flood

The warm, radiant spring sunshine of the Year of the Horse 2026 has spread across the streets and corners of Tuyen Quang. The vibrant pink of peach blossoms heralds a peaceful and happy new year. Just a few months ago, many areas in the province were still submerged in mud from natural disasters, but with the indomitable spirit of the people and the joint efforts of the entire political system, businesses, and community, Tuyen Quang has risen again. This spring is not only the beginning of a new year, but also a heroic epic of faith and new life sprouting from the mud, affirming the powerful resurgence of the homeland after the disaster.

Spring arrives with the sounds of drums and love songs. In residential areas from cities to highland villages, the colors of peach blossoms, orange blossoms, and chrysanthemums are displaying their fragrance. The highland markets are bustling again, and the vibrant clothing of the Hmong, Dao, and Tay people seems to give wings to renewed joy.

In Ha Giang 1 ward, the streets were once flooded, but that was a few months ago. Now, the atmosphere of spring has returned, bringing a strong sense of revival. Houses that were deeply submerged and devastated have been renovated and repaired to welcome the approaching New Year. According to Mr. Le Xuan Manh, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Ha Giang 1 ward, the damage caused by Typhoon No. 10 in 2025 severely impacted the lives of the people in the area, with estimated losses exceeding 500 billion VND. However, with the urgent involvement of the entire political system and the community, and the efforts of the people, houses, roads, schools, lighting systems, and clean water supply have been restored. Overcoming the storms and floods was an extremely difficult time, but it was a lesson in solidarity and mutual support, and a motivation for officials, Party members, and the people of the ward to strive forward in the new year.

Ms. Bui Thi Tuoi, from Group 10, Ha Giang 1 Ward, chatted with us while quickly weighing rice for customers. In the days leading up to Tet (Lunar New Year), her shop is bustling with customers buying sticky rice for making banh chung (traditional Vietnamese rice cakes). Looking at Ms. Tuoi's tidy rice shop, no one would guess that the floods had swept away tens of tons of rice belonging to her family. Ms. Tuoi recounted that after the floods, with the urgent support of the government and the community, her family quickly resumed production and business. With the vibrant New Year approaching, Ms. Tuoi's family, like many other people here, is diligently working to prepare for a prosperous and joyful Tet.

Roads in Lung Cu commune affected by floods have been repaired and are now open for the upcoming Tet holiday. Many houses that were completely destroyed or partially damaged have been repaired or rebuilt thanks to the efforts of local authorities, political and social organizations, who have mobilized all available resources. This Tet, 100% of households affected by the floods will be able to celebrate the New Year in new homes. Mr. Tran Duc Chung, Chairman of the People's Committee of Lung Cu commune, shared that typhoons No. 10 and 11 caused 7 households to have their houses completely destroyed, 5 households to have their houses partially damaged, 59 households to be in high-risk areas requiring relocation, and 2 roads to be affected by landslides. To date, the joint effort to support households in rebuilding and repairing their houses has been implemented urgently so that by Tet 2026, all affected households will be living in new homes. In addition, the commune has implemented the task of finding land to resettle the displaced households, and 34 households have already been allocated land. The storm and floods left behind heavy losses of life and property in Lung Cu commune, but the support and recovery efforts have been implemented by the Party committee and government from the province to the commune with the highest responsibility, so that people have been able to stabilize their lives again, easing the pain and loss, and reviving new lives in this spring sunshine.

Chiêm Hóa commune was also severely affected by the natural disaster of typhoon number 10, but in every house and every street, the colors of spring are rising, vibrant and fresh, reflecting the enduring and resilient spirit of the people here. Leading us to visit the rice and corn fields that were previously completely flooded and not yet harvested, but are now lush with various vegetables, Comrade Ma Thị Tuyết, Party Secretary and head of Ngoã village, Chiêm Hóa commune, shared: “Although the storm and floods damaged many areas of rice, corn, and chili crops, with the spirit of urgent restoration, the storm and floods were only a test of people's resilience. This Tet, the people of Ngoã village are preparing for a new harvest of vegetables to have a prosperous Tet.” While busily tending to his chili plants to ensure a timely harvest for Tet (Lunar New Year), Mr. Ha Doan Sung from Ngoa village said: “This year, my family will harvest over 2,000 square meters of chili and over 1,000 square meters of winter vegetables. The losses from the storms and floods have only made people like me appreciate the fruits of our labor and become more resilient in the face of natural disasters.”

Floods may sweep away many things, but they cannot sweep away willpower and human kindness. In the springtime of today, Tuyen Quang seems brighter and warmer, where each citizen becomes a spring flower blooming on flood-stricken land, radiating the fragrance of resilience, faith, and hope.
