In 1994, Ms. Thon got married with nothing. In the early years of marriage, her life was full of hardship, making her always think of ways to escape poverty. After much thought, in 2010, she discussed with her husband to borrow 10 million VND from the Social Policy Bank to raise fish. Of that, she spent 5 million VND to dig a pond, the rest to buy grass carp, common carp, tilapia, etc. to raise.
A year later, realizing that fish farming was effective, she continued to borrow capital through the trust channel of the Commune Women's Union to buy two pairs of breeding pigs. Just over three months later, the pigs grew well, and she sold them for more than 6 million VND. She continued to invest that profit and expand the scale of the farm. From a few pigs at first, her family's herd now has 25 pigs. Every 3 months, she sells about 5 pigs, earning more than 20 million VND.
The family's fish pond also brings significant results. Thanks to the use of clean water from streams and natural food, the cost of raising fish is reduced and profits are high. Each year, from the fish pond alone, she earns about 70 million VND. In addition, she also grows more than 2 hectares of hybrid acacia and other crops, earning an additional 60 million VND each year.
Thanks to her diligence and the right approach, by 2013, her family had escaped poverty. Currently, with a total income of nearly 200 million VND/year, Ms. Thon has the means to take care of her three children going to university, her family life is gradually stable, and she has savings. For many years, she has been recognized as a typical woman in economic development in the locality.
Not only taking care of her family, Ms. Thon is also willing to share her experiences with the people. From choosing breeds, raising methods, to utilizing natural foods, she guides everyone so that everyone can try. Ms. Ho Thi Nga, a resident of A Luoi 1 commune, commented: “Ms. Thon is a hard-working woman, overcoming difficulties, daring to think, daring to do. Not only enriching herself, she also actively helps women change their thinking and ways of doing things so that they can rise together.”
A Luoi 1 Commune was formed after merging four communes of Hong Thuy, Hong Van, Trung Son and Hong Kim of the old A Luoi district. The whole commune has more than 12,000 people, mainly Ta Oi, Co Tu and Van Kieu ethnic groups. Although there have been many changes, people's lives are still difficult, currently there are about 700 poor households in the area.
Mr. Ho Van Vac, Head of the Economic Department of A Luoi 1 Commune, said that in the coming time, we will continue to guide people to promote local advantages to develop fruit trees such as grapefruit, orange, longan, and combine with livestock to improve the economy. The commune will also create favorable conditions for units to disburse loans, open technical training courses, and support people to improve their knowledge of planting and raising livestock to develop a sustainable economy.
Sharing about her future direction, Ms. Le Thi Thon said: “When livestock and crop farming develop, the family economy will also improve a lot. In the future, I will continue to expand the model, especially pig farming, to take care of my children's education and have more conditions for their future life.”
