In recent years, the Cam Khe district has seen an increasing number of dynamic women who dare to think and act, applying science and technology, and effectively exploiting the available potential in the locality to develop the economy and achieve sustainable poverty reduction. Ms. Hoang Thi Hop, born in 1971 in Mo Son area, Son Tinh commune, is one of the outstanding examples.
Officials from the Social Policy Bank branch in Cam Khe district visited the economic development model of Ms. Hoang Thi Hop's family.
Meeting her as she returned from working in the fields and busied herself preparing lunch for her family, we clearly felt the diligence of this rural woman from the mountainous region. Quickly placing a kettle of water on the stove, she cordially invited us to tour her family's property. The house was solidly built, ensuring comfortable living conditions for the family; the livestock pens were neat and tidy, and the fish pond was surrounded by many fruit trees, creating a clean and airy environment.
According to Ms. Hoang Thi Hop, her family sells two commercial cows annually and breeds them, generating nearly 50 million VND in revenue. They also sell over 1 ton of fish fry and 5-6 quintals of commercial fish, bringing in nearly 250 million VND. After deducting all expenses, her family earns a profit of approximately 200 million VND per year.
It is known that previously, Ms. Hoang Thi Hop's family was a poor household in the commune, facing many difficulties due to lack of capital and livestock farming experience. In 2014, her family received a 30 million VND loan from the Social Policy Bank branch in Cam Khe district, part of the poverty alleviation loan program. Following the principle of using short-term gains to support long-term growth, she changed inefficient crops and livestock, such as switching from one rice crop and one fish crop to raising fish fry; and from raising poultry to raising livestock. Along with this, she applied scientific and technological advancements to production, increasing productivity and livestock quality. As a result, in 2018, her family was removed from the commune's poverty list. After three years of escaping poverty, the family still faced many difficulties, so they were given another 100 million VND loan under the program for newly escaped-from-poverty households.
Sharing her experience of escaping poverty, Ms. Hop said: “After receiving the loan, I discussed with my husband investing in breeding cattle, building barns, and digging a pond for fish farming. Thanks to using the capital for the right purpose and having a solid grasp of scientific knowledge through training courses on livestock farming and learning from mass media about disease prevention and maintaining clean barns, the livestock herd has grown well. With the determination not to succumb to poverty, my husband and I are now confident in our economic approach and will not fall back into poverty.”
Through hard work, perseverance, and a keen sense of economic development, Ms. Hoang Thi Hop and her family have risen to achieve economic development and sustainable poverty reduction in this still challenging region. Besides her work and production, she actively participates in the Women's Association and local activities, hoping to contribute to building a more prosperous and beautiful homeland.
