In 2023, Brown publicly admitted to bankruptcy, despite having earned a salary of up to £50,000 per week during his playing career. According to the former England international, ill-advised investments and careless financial management led him into a spiral of debt. "It's been an incredibly difficult journey," Brown shared in an interview in November 2024.
