Mexico is stepping up security measures and support for tourists ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026, but officials are also advising millions of international fans to proactively familiarize themselves with local regulations and follow safety guidelines during their stay.
Three Mexican cities – Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey – will host matches of the world's biggest football tournament. According to tourism and security experts, visitors should limit travel to areas outside of designated tourist zones, especially at night, after the matches have ended.
Safety advice for fans
In Mexico City, areas such as Condesa, Roma Norte, and Polanco are considered suitable for tourists to stay in, while some areas with more complex security situations are not recommended for international visitors.
Authorities also recommend that fans use official ride-hailing apps such as Uber or DiDi instead of hailing taxis on the streets to minimize the risk of encountering unlicensed transportation services or scams.
In addition, authorities advise tourists not to carry large amounts of cash, to avoid displaying jewelry or valuable electronic devices, and to always keep their personal belongings safe in crowded places.
Mexican street food is considered diverse and appealing, but tourists may experience some digestive issues due to differences in environment and eating habits. Authorities recommend choosing busy, hygienic food stalls and limiting the use of ice cubes at smaller, independent vendors.
In Mexico, drinking alcohol in public is prohibited and may result in fines or temporary detention. Alcoholic beverages are only permitted in restaurants, bars, or other authorized establishments.
Furthermore, tipping is considered an important part of service culture in Mexico. In restaurants, common tipping amounts range from 10% to 15% of the bill, and failing to leave a tip can be considered impolite.
Authorities advise travelers to limit currency exchange at the airport, as exchange rates at these counters are often lower than outside. Travelers should only exchange enough cash to cover initial expenses, and then use the services of authorized currency exchange points (Casa de Cambio) in the city or withdraw money from ATMs of major banks to get better exchange rates.
Meanwhile, security experts advised fans to limit driving outside of urban centers, especially on less-traveled roads, and to be wary of ATM scams.
Health and climate considerations
Regarding health, Mexican authorities advise tourists not to drink tap water but to use only bottled water. Additionally, weather conditions and terrain in the host cities could also affect tourists' health.
Mexico City is situated at an altitude of approximately 2,240 meters above sea level, which can cause many visitors to experience symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, or shortness of breath during their first few days of stay. Meanwhile, temperatures in Monterrey in the summer often exceed 35 degrees Celsius, increasing the risk of heatstroke and dehydration.
The organizers of the 2026 World Cup also implemented strict regulations regarding items brought into the stadiums. Flares, fireworks, laser pointers, glass bottles, and flags with long handles are all on the prohibited list.
According to the plan, Mexico has deployed approximately 100,000 security personnel in the host cities, including the military, police forces, and private security guards, to ensure the safety of residents and tourists throughout the duration of the tournament.
Travel experts note that owning a World Cup ticket does not guarantee entry into Mexico or absolute safety during the trip. Travelers should thoroughly research immigration regulations, local laws, and purchase comprehensive travel insurance before departure.
The 2026 World Cup will take place from June 11 to July 19, 2026, in three North American countries: Mexico, the United States, and Canada. The opening match is scheduled to be held at the legendary Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, featuring the host nation Mexico and South Africa.
