Pơng Drang commune was established by merging the entire natural area and population of the administrative units of Ea Ngai and Tân Lập communes and Pơng Drang town. The commune's durian-growing area is mainly concentrated in the former Tân Lập commune. The durian harvest season lasts from September to November, later than in some other regions, giving Pơng Drang commune an advantage in supply when the market enters a period of scarcity.
In the context of agricultural production increasingly focusing on quality standards and traceability, Pơng Drang commune has proactively built a regional durian cultivation chain, enhancing the value of the product. For the 2025 crop year, the commune has 2,362 hectares of durian, of which 1,580 hectares are ready for harvest, with an estimated yield of 13,900 tons. Approximately 800 hectares are planted as a monoculture durian, while the remainder is intercropped with coffee, pepper, and other crops. Pơng Drang commune has been granted 26 planting area codes and 3 packaging facility codes for official export by Chinese Customs, covering a total area of 534.3 hectares and involving 358 households.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Bich (village 15) said that her family has been growing durian for over 10 years. Previously, durian prices fluctuated, sometimes soaring, sometimes plummeting. Since her family joined the cooperative, receiving guidance on establishing a planting area code and linking with export businesses, durian prices have become more stable; as long as they follow the correct care procedures and the fruit meets standards, there are buyers willing to pay a high price.
"The management of planting area codes and packaging facilities must be carried out seriously and regularly. Each household and cooperative needs to be clearly aware of its role in maintaining the reputation and brand of the locality, " said Mr. You may also like |
Similarly, Mr. Ho Van Dung, from Tan Lap 2 village, who owns 1 hectare of durian trees, shared: “Participating in the regional cultivation chain helps farmers change their methods and farming techniques. From keeping production logs, using fertilizers and pesticides according to proper procedures to harvesting and packaging, everything is strictly controlled. As a result, the quality of durian fruit is consistent, and the economic efficiency is significantly higher.”
Recognizing that managing durian growing area codes is a key requirement for ensuring sustainable exports, the People's Committee of the commune regularly inspects and monitors growing areas and packaging facilities that have been granted export codes to maintain safe production, fully meet technical standards and requirements from importing markets; coordinates with specialized agencies to organize training, technology transfer, and support people in applying digital technology in orchard management, electronic logbook recording, and traceability. The commune government will continue to cooperate with specialized sectors to expand the area of durian meeting export standards, encourage farmers to apply science and technology, and digital transformation in orchard management and smart production. At the same time, it will promote trade, build product brands, and link them with geographical indications.

According to a review, the commune currently has 33 businesses and establishments that purchase durian, mainly located in the central area of the commune. According to Mr. Phan Hoang Lam, Chairman of the People's Committee of Pơng Drang commune, the local government is actively seeking and encouraging businesses with experience in durian production, consumption, processing, and export to invest in order to form a closed chain from purchasing, preliminary processing, preservation to export. The participation of businesses and investors will not only help the local durian product have a more stable market, but also create more local jobs and increase the economic value for the people.
Despite the achievements, durian production and consumption in Pơng Drang commune still face some limitations. Therefore, Pơng Drang commune advises people to carefully and transparently sign purchasing contracts; proactively link with reputable businesses to ensure stable output. In particular, households should focus on caring for and intensively cultivating their existing durian orchards in a way that prioritizes quality and sustainability.
