Tien Lu commune is expanding the cultivation of the Vinh Hoa purple medicinal rice variety.

Since 2023, a model of cultivating Vinh Hoa purple medicinal rice (purple rice) has been established in the low-lying rice fields of Cong Cuoi, Hoang Chung area, Tien Lu commune, with two harvests per year. Thanks to a selling price twice as high as traditional rice, the model not only brings outstanding economic efficiency but also opens up opportunities to promote the shift in crop structure and increase income for local people.

Mr. Hoang Anh Vu, 58 years old, an official of the Tuan Hoan Agricultural Production Cooperative in Tien Lu commune, excitedly shared: "In 2023, after receiving support from the model village construction program, the Tuan Hoan herbal rice cooperative was established with 8 members. Its mission was to introduce new varieties to the fields and develop OCOP products. We started cultivating the Vinh Hoa herbal rice variety (originating from Nghe An province) on an area of ​​over 3 hectares. In the first season, we were worried about the effectiveness, but after visiting and learning about the actual situation, we decided to mass-produce this rice variety in our homeland."

Vinh Hoa herbal rice is a hybrid variety developed by Vinh Hoa Science and Technology Co., Ltd. This rice variety has outstanding advantages with its high nutritional content and natural purple color. It is a health-supporting rice suitable for people with diabetes, those on a diet, and those who are ill.

The main characteristics of this rice variety are its purple stems and grains, and its early-stage leaves, which later turn dark green. Notably, it tolerates intensive cultivation, has good disease resistance, strong stems, healthy foliage, and vigorous tillering; it can be grown twice a year. The average yield is 5.5-6.2 tons/ha, suitable for the natural conditions and climate of many localities nationwide. Due to the benefits this rice variety offers, many localities have collaborated in its production and cultivation.

Since its first harvest, the Tuan Hoan Agricultural Production Cooperative has entered its seventh rice crop season with a total cultivated area of ​​nearly 6 hectares. Given the nutritional value and high yield of this herbal rice variety, the Tuan Hoan Agricultural Production Cooperative is encouraging its members to further expand production to meet local consumption needs. In addition, the cooperative continues to collaborate with scientific and technical institutions to gradually build a 3-star OCOP (One Commune One Product) brand at the provincial level and upgrade its quality, bringing the herbal rice product to the market in larger quantities.

According to Mr. Hoang Anh Vu, in terms of yield, medicinal rice is equivalent to other local rice varieties, reaching about 60 quintals/hectare, but the selling price is 15-20% higher than conventional rice (35,000 VND/kg of rice). The rice is clean, less susceptible to pests and diseases, and has a growing period of 110-115 days until harvest, so it requires almost no pesticides, reducing production costs to a level comparable to conventional rice. Medicinal rice has a high nutritional content and is good for health. Therefore, we will continue to maintain and expand the production of this rice variety.

Chairman of Tien Lu Commune People's Committee, Truong Van Quang, assessed: After nearly four years of implementing the herbal rice cultivation model in the locality, it has shown high economic efficiency on low-lying land, transforming from one crop per year to two crops per year. The model of Tuan Hoan Agricultural Production Cooperative creates opportunities for people inside and outside the commune to visit and learn from the experience, contributing to the shift in economic structure towards commodity production, bringing high value to many people in the area. The bold application of science and technology and the transformation of crop structure demonstrate the innovative thinking and methods of the people in economic development, contributing to building an advanced and model new rural area in the locality. The commune government will continue to encourage the expansion of the area for herbal rice cultivation in the future.
