Data from analytics firm Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) highlights eight common use cases among iPhone owners in the US, showing that 74% of users watch videos at least once or twice a day. The data was collected over a 12-month period, ending in March 2024.
Texting and using the internet are the primary purposes of iPhone users.
According to the data, the top spots belong to texting and internet use, with approximately 95% and 94% of iPhone owners texting or using the internet on their phones at least once a day, respectively. Taking and editing photos (61%) is another popular activity, but it receives the least attention from iPhone owners among the various use cases. It ranks behind gaming, with approximately 64% of iPhone owners playing games at least once a day.
Although this number may seem low, it still means that three out of five iPhone owners take and edit photos daily. In addition, iPhones are used for other common purposes such as email (81%), making phone calls (80%), and listening to music (71%).
The report discusses how the recently released Apple Intelligence could impact iPhone use cases. Apple Intelligence includes a range of artificial intelligence (AI) features such as writing tools, email summarization, and smart email replies. These will enhance writing capabilities, benefiting iPhone owners' texting and emailing habits, along with AI-generated custom emojis to add a fun element. Some high-usage apps could leverage Siri's improved capabilities to enhance the user experience when accessing information from the internet.
Given that camera improvements have driven device upgrades in the past, CIRP believes that the photography enhancements provided by Apple Intelligence could have a significant impact on iPhone users and will likely encourage upgrades to new devices to take advantage of these advancements.
Common uses like making calls, listening to music, watching videos, and playing games are "less likely to improve directly with Apple Intelligence," however, Apple has finally added call recording and transcription capabilities to iOS 18, providing some additional perks for users.
