In recent days, the price of mangoes sold in Ho Chi Minh City has dropped sharply. Even famous varieties like Hoa Loc mangoes are now only 20,000 – 40,000 VND/kg in many places, whereas previously they were usually over 50,000 VND/kg.

Other varieties such as Australian mangoes, Cat Chu mangoes, and Tu Quy mangoes also cost less than 30,000 VND/kg. Notably, popular mango varieties like Keo mangoes and giant Tuong mangoes have dropped to below 10,000 VND/kg.
Not only in traditional markets, but also at the Bach Hoa Xanh supermarket chain, there is a type of mango sold for only 9,000 VND/kg.
Mr. Hoang Manh Cuong, Business Director of Vinaxo Co., Ltd. ( Dong Thap ) - a company specializing in purchasing and processing mangoes - said that every year this is the time when mango prices are lowest due to the peak harvest season.
However, compared to the same period in recent years, prices this year are lower due to a combination of factors such as a bumper crop, increased mango supply from Cambodia because exports to Thailand are not possible, and weak domestic demand.

Due to low raw material prices, Vinaxo is stepping up procurement, purchasing tens of thousands of tons to stockpile and supply for processing until around October.
Mr. Cuong added that mango growing areas in Vietnam are scattered, making it difficult for businesses to procure the fruit due to having to go through many intermediaries.
Some suppliers offer low prices but can only supply a few tons, while businesses usually buy dozens of tons at a time.

Furthermore, only areas with concentrated mango cultivation have a large number of skilled pickers, which helps ensure the quality of the fruit after harvest.
However, according to Mr. Cuong, the peak mango harvest season will end in just a few days, so prices may rise again, expected from June onwards.
