(Dan Tri Newspaper) - Striker Nguyen Xuan Son woke up after a 1 hour and 30 minute surgery on January 6th. Immediately afterwards, the Vietnamese national team striker sang the Vietnamese national anthem, delighting fans.
Xuan Son suffered an injury during the second leg of the AFF Cup final between Vietnam and Thailand at the Rajamangala Stadium on the evening of January 5th. After attempting to pass the ball into the penalty area, the 27-year-old lost his balance and fell to the ground, breaking his right leg. Immediately after returning to Vietnam, the striker underwent surgery less than 24 hours after sustaining the injury.

The surgery ended at 9:43 PM on January 6th, and Xuan Son was awake, pain-free, and began gently moving his toes immediately after the operation. Sharing on her personal page, Marce Leseippel (Xuan Son's wife) said that the striker wearing jersey number 12 was not yet fully conscious, but when asked to sing the Vietnamese national anthem, he did not hesitate to sing the lyrics clearly, even though he could only move his lips slightly. According to Professor Tran Trung Dung, the surgery was more successful than expected. Chairman Nguyen Van Thien of Nam Dinh Club also visited Xuan Son immediately after he left the operating room. He said that the best rehabilitation methods would be applied. "Xuan Son has dedicated himself completely to Vietnam, and he deserves to be honored. The player must return soon and continue to wear the Vietnamese national team jersey," Professor Tran Trung Dung shared. Xuan Son expressed his gratitude to Chairman Thien and the fans for always being by his side during this difficult time. "It's okay, I'll be back soon," Xuan Son confidently shared. Coach Vu Hong Viet and Technical Director Nguyen Trung Kien were also present at the hospital where Xuan Son had just undergone surgery to advise the player on how to eat and maintain his health. When asked not to eat pho and banana cake to avoid weight gain, Xuan Son humorously replied: "No way, pho and banana cake are delicious." Nguyen Xuan Son made a huge contribution to Vietnam's AFF Cup 2024 championship. He only participated in 5 matches in the tournament but scored 7 goals. The 27-year-old striker made history by becoming the player who scored the most goals for the Vietnamese national team in a single AFF Cup tournament. Xuan Son helped the Vietnamese team overcome many obstacles in this year's tournament, winning both the Top Scorer and Best Player awards of the AFF Cup 2024.
