Spring arrives at Dan Khao

At this time, residents of the Dan Khao resettlement area in Luc Hanh commune are helping each other prepare the necessary items and materials to complete their houses and village roads in preparation for the Lunar New Year of the Horse. Just over a year ago, 10 households lived in constant fear that the mountain range behind their houses would sweep away all their belongings and their lives. With the government's support and assistance in relocating to the new resettlement area, the people are now able to stay and continue farming in their village with peace of mind.

Settling down and establishing a stable life

About 10 km along a concrete road from the center of Luc Hanh commune, we arrived at the Dan Khao resettlement area, where newly built houses stood close together in a safe new resettlement location. Ms. La Thi Uong was repairing her house, reminiscing about her old home: In early September 2024, Typhoon Yagi caused prolonged heavy rain, creating cracks in the mountain range behind the houses of 10 households in the village, posing a constant risk of landslides. Given the urgent need to relocate the residents of Dan Khao village from the dangerous area as soon as possible, the Provincial People's Committee directed relevant departments and localities to quickly develop a project to move the households to a safe place and stabilize their lives.

According to Ms. Nong Thi Luc, Head of Dan Khao village, Luc Hanh commune, the village has 10 households located in an area at high risk of landslides. Therefore, the Yen Son District People's Committee (before the implementation of the two-tiered local government system) issued a directive to the commune to encourage and educate the residents, while also providing financial support for them to build new houses in the resettlement area. Furthermore, the local authorities proceeded with land clearance and leveling, mobilizing excavators to prepare the ground for the households.

During the days of relocating to their new homes, the people of Dan Khao village faced many difficulties. While most households in their old homes had built very sturdy houses, moving to the new location disrupted their lives...

Welcoming us into their newly built house, still smelling of fresh paint, Mr. Nong Van Toan and Mrs. La Thi Nang from Dan Khao village, Luc Hanh commune, excitedly shared: Thanks to the policies of the Party and the State, along with the support of the local government, their family now has a new house to celebrate Tet. Their family life is stable, and they are now focusing on production to increase their economic income.

Building a prosperous life

Dan Khao village has 104 households with over 446 inhabitants, 96% of whom are Tay and Dao ethnic minorities. Ms. Nong Thi Luc, the village head, added that whenever there is a need for community support, the villagers readily lend a hand, such as contributing labor to build houses for poor households, cleaning village roads and alleys, and constructing new rural infrastructure... especially helping and assisting in moving the belongings of households in dangerous areas to new residences. Thanks to their solidarity and willingness to overcome difficulties, the economy of the households in the village is now stable, with only one poor household remaining, and efforts are being made to eradicate poverty as soon as possible.

Comrade Le Quang Toan, Secretary of the Party Committee of Luc Hanh commune, said: Thanks to the State's attention, 10 households in Dan Khao village, living in areas at high risk of flash floods and landslides, have been relocated to a resettlement area. After more than a year in their new homes, the lives of the people have changed significantly. Currently, the households live in sturdy houses with convenient transportation. Their material and spiritual lives are gradually improving. 100% of households have access to the national power grid, clean water, and sanitary facilities. The people in the resettlement area are actively changing the structure of crops and livestock, applying science and technology to production, and increasing productivity.

To further improve the lives of people in the Dan Khao resettlement area, Luc Hanh commune continues to promote and encourage households to participate in training programs, vocational training, farming, and livestock raising; and create all conditions for them to borrow capital from banks to invest in economic development and increase income.

Although the new homes of the Dan Khao resettlement area still face many difficulties, with the attention of the Party and the State, and the efforts of the local people, the lives of the people are gradually stabilizing. This Tet holiday, the people will be much happier knowing they are settled in a safe place, no longer living in constant fear every time the rainy season and floods arrive.
