This morning (August 21st), Fluminense won 2-0 against America de Cali in the Copa Sudamericana at the Maracana Stadium. Notably, Fluminense goalkeeper Fabio set a great record after this match.

Accordingly, this was Fabio's 1,391st match in his professional career. The 45-year-old goalkeeper has officially surpassed the record of 1,390 appearances held by legendary goalkeeper Peter Shilton (recorded in the Guinness Book of Records).
According to the International Federation of Football Statistics and History (IFFHS), Fabio played 30 matches for União Bandeirante from 1997-2000. He then moved to Vasco da Gama and made 150 appearances there between 2000 and 2004.
Between 2005 and 2021, Fabio played 976 matches for Cruzeiro. From 2021 to the present, he has played 235 matches for Fluminense. Notably, despite being 45 years old, this goalkeeper remains very fit and is the first-choice goalkeeper for Fluminense.
After Fabio and Peter Shilton, C. Ronaldo ranks third on the list of most appearances with 1,287 matches. If he plays until he is 45 years old, the Portuguese superstar could easily surpass Fabio to hold this record alone. In the top 5 for most appearances, fans also see the presence of Paul Bastock (1,284 matches) and Rogerio Ceni (1,226 matches).

Throughout his career, Fabio never played for the Brazilian national team. He only represented the country at the U23 level. Despite this, he still had a prolific career with 27 titles, including the Copa Libertadores and the 2004 Copa America (even though he didn't play for the senior Brazilian team). More recently, Fabio also reached the semi-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup with Fluminense.
Speaking after setting the incredible record, Fabio said: “I have to thank everyone who has always been by my side, my parents, my siblings, my friends, and my wife. I always try to live as a good person. The most important thing is to be a good teammate. I believe that without God, nothing can be achieved.”
