YouTube has just announced a series of new changes aimed at improving the platform's ability to recognize AI-generated videos.

YouTube will automatically label videos containing AI-generated or significantly AI-edited content, and place this warning in a more visible location to help viewers quickly identify AI-generated content on the platform.

Previously, information about whether a video used AI only appeared in the extended description, requiring users to actively check the "How this content was made" section. With the new change, the "AI" label will appear directly below the player for longer videos and will be displayed as an overlay on YouTube Shorts.

According to YouTube, the new system will begin rolling out this week. In addition to requiring creators to self-declare when using highly authentic AI, the platform is also adding “internal signals” to automatically detect AI videos. If a creator doesn't declare it but the system determines there's a “significant level of authentic AI use,” the video will still be automatically labeled.

Rene Ritchie, YouTube's editor and creator engagement representative, said the goal of this change is to give viewers "context at first glance." "If content looks authentic but is created with AI, viewers will know immediately," he said.

YouTube says the AI labels will not affect monetization or video recommendation algorithms. "It's purely about providing the right information to viewers at the right time," Rene Ritchie emphasized.

In cases where a video is incorrectly labeled, creators can edit the declared status in YouTube Studio. However, YouTube states that AI labels will be permanent in some cases, including content created using the platform's AI tools such as Veo or Dream Screen. Additionally, YouTube now uses technologies like SynthID to detect AI-generated or edited content.

According to YouTube, content deemed animated, unrealistic, or only lightly edited will continue to display AI information in the expanded description instead of being directly labeled on the video.

The new changes were announced amid increased scrutiny of AI content by YouTube and Google, as simulated videos become increasingly popular and difficult to distinguish from real content on the internet.
