10,000 Ngoc Linh ginseng plants were planted elsewhere, only 8 of them flowered, Quang Nam is considering liquidation

On March 13, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Quang Nam province said it had just reported to the People's Committee of Quang Nam province the results of the trial planting program of Ngoc Linh ginseng outside Nam Tra My district.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Quang Nam, since the end of 2021, many districts have begun testing the planting of Ngoc Linh ginseng . Young ginseng plants are brought from nurseries in Nam Tra My to areas with similar soil conditions for planting and care with the expectation of expanding the planting area.

There are 8 models with a total of nearly 10,000 Ngoc Linh ginseng plants grown in the districts of Bac Tra My, Tay Giang, Nam Giang, Phuoc Son, Nui Thanh, and Tien Phuoc.

At first, the ginseng plants in these newly planted gardens grew well, but gradually withered. The rate at which the plants developed stems and leaves after the dormant season decreased over the years.

The evaluation results up to 2024 show that the rate of trees developing stems and leaves is lower than 9%. In particular, the model implemented by the Saola Conservation Area Management Board did not even have trees developing stems and leaves. Meanwhile, the model tested by Tien Phuoc district had all the ginseng trees dead.

"Ginseng grows very poorly, shown in factors including low plant height, poorly developed root system, and very small tubers. Most plants only form 1 compound leaf, and 8 ginseng plants planted in newly flowered areas do not form fruit" - a report from the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Quang Nam mentioned.

With results contrary to expectations, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Quang Nam province proposed that the People's Committee of Quang Nam province end 7 out of 8 experimental gardens and hand over the tubers and plants to localities for care and monitoring.

As for the ginseng garden grown in Nui Thanh district, it is recommended to continue to be maintained until the end of 2025 because the evaluation period is not enough 3 years.
