The food website Taste Atlas has published a list of the 100 best rice dishes in the world . Three Vietnamese dishes, very familiar to everyday life, are included in the list.

Broken rice (Com Tam) is the 11th-ranked Vietnamese dish on the list – Photo taken from YouTube.
Broken rice
The highest-rated of the three main Vietnamese dishes is broken rice with a 4.5/5 star rating, placing it 11th on the list.
According to Taste Atlas, the dish's unique feature lies in its broken rice grains. When cooked, this type of rice creates a light and fluffy texture. A serving of rice is typically accompanied by side dishes such as fried eggs, pork skin, grilled ribs, etc.
In addition, side dishes such as pickles, cucumbers, tomatoes, and fried shallots are indispensable.
They both create a harmonious tapestry of colors on the plate and work together seamlessly to produce a distinctive flavor.
Fish sauce is an inseparable element of broken rice. It's the flavor that breathes life into the dish.
With Saigon-style broken rice, diners will easily find bowls of fish sauce that are rich in sweetness and not too thick.
As for Long Xuyên broken rice, diners will notice a slightly saltier taste and a fish sauce with a certain thickness.
One thing that appeals to foreign diners is that they can easily find food carts selling rice dishes all along the streets of Vietnam.
The image of a piece of red, fragrant meat sizzling on the grill has also become iconic when preparing broken rice.
Banh beo
This traditional dish received a 4.1/5 star rating.
This Hue dish has long been associated with the image of women pushing carts around or sitting somewhere on a street corner.

Banh beo is made from steamed rice flour. A truly authentic Vietnamese banh beo dish cannot be without accompanying ingredients such as minced shrimp, pork, fried onions, pork cracklings, fried bread, etc.
Initially, Vietnamese people were familiar with two versions: Hue-style banh beo and Quang Nam- style banh beo.
In Quang Nam, this dish is prepared with thick, large cakes and is usually served with a thick, sticky batter containing minced meat, shrimp, chives, etc.
Meanwhile, Hue-style banh beo is thinner and smaller. The main distinguishing feature is the dried shrimp powder, sometimes with crispy fried pork skin. Later, a Southern version of banh beo also emerged.
The Taste Atlas website points out that the distinctive feature of Vietnamese bánh bèo is the indentation in the center of the cake, used to hold various fillings to create different flavors.
Banh Tet
With the same 4.1/5 star rating as bánh bèo, Vietnamese bánh tét ranks last on the list.

Banh Tet
This type of sticky rice cake is a traditional specialty of Southern Vietnam.
When making bánh tét, bakers usually stuff the filling with mung beans, pork, and eggs, then wrap all the ingredients in banana leaves before cooking.
Besides the traditional version, vegetarian banh tet was created to serve those who do not eat meat on certain meaningful occasions.
The cakes now mainly consist of mung bean filling, but this doesn't detract from their original delicious flavor.
One reason why foreigners love it is that the banana leaves give the cake a unique aroma and flavor.
Bánh tét seems to be an indispensable part of some special Vietnamese festivals.
Japan is the number one best-tasting rice-based dish in the world.
Coming in first place is sushi, an iconic culinary symbol of Japan. It consists of seaweed wrapped around white rice and topped with various ingredients.

The top three dishes in the ranking of delicious rice-based dishes.
Next up is Kaisendon, a Japanese rice bowl dish with fresh seafood.
A typical sashimi dish consists of thinly sliced seafood, called sashimi, placed on top of rice, and may be accompanied by seaweed, perilla leaves, basil, etc.
Coming in third is Arroz con bogavante. This dish originates from Valencia and has become a traditional Spanish dish.
Lobster, braised fish, white wine, olive oil… are the ingredients used in the stir-fry to create the dish's distinctive broth.
