In the home, virtual assistants are often present in basic smart speakers or smart displays. You can place these devices anywhere near a power outlet.
With their microphones always on, they listen for commands to assist users. However, not every location is suitable for smart speakers to operate effectively and safely.

1. In the bathroom
Bathrooms are not ideal places for electronic devices in general, and especially for smart speakers with fabric covers.
Steam can damage electronic components over time, humidity causes dangerous short circuits, and mold can build up on speaker membranes. Additionally, you could accidentally drop the device into a sink or toilet – a bad scenario for both the device and the user.
If you want to listen to music in the bathroom, use specialized waterproof Bluetooth speakers. For the kitchen, you should also avoid "splash zones," although the concern is lower than in the bathroom. Ideally, place the device at least 15-20 cm away from the sink.
2. Near a fireplace or vent.
Electronic devices are very sensitive to high temperatures. They tend to overheat and shut down, or even melt, if placed too close to heaters, stovetops, or microwave ovens.
In the worst-case scenario, they could cause a fire. Smart speakers work best in well-ventilated areas.
3. By the window
Placing smart speakers near windows poses a security risk. A malicious individual could stand outside, shout through the glass, and activate the virtual assistant. Real-world testing has shown that even through thick tempered glass, the speaker can still recognize commands from outside.
This is especially dangerous if your speaker is connected to a smart door lock system, security camera, or heating system. For safety, keep the device away from windows.
Should you put a smart speaker in your bedroom?
Many people are concerned about privacy when placing devices with microphones and cameras in the bedroom. This is a legitimate concern, but you can address it by:
- Manually mute the microphone and camera: Most devices have a physical button to disable this access.
- Choose the right device: Prioritize speaker models without cameras specifically designed for bedrooms. In fact, the device only starts recording after correctly identifying the "activation keyword".
If you want a smart and modern alarm clock, the bedroom is still a viable option if you know how to control privacy.
So where is the ideal place to put a smart speaker?
- On a bookshelf or display shelf.
- Next to the desk or computer workstation.
- On the bedside table (bedside table).
- Hang it on the wall (away from windows).
- Corner of the living room.
- On the kitchen counter (away from the sink).
An easily visible location where you can see the indicator light ring when the device is operating.
Wherever you place it, make sure you can easily access the microphone mute button and power cord in case you need to quickly restart the device.
