Information regarding 40,000 hectares of winter-spring rice in Can Tho that have not yet been sold under contract was widely discussed at a meeting between the Can Tho City Department of Industry and Trade and various departments, agencies, businesses, and cooperatives yesterday afternoon, February 21st.

According to data provided at the meeting, only nearly 20,500 hectares out of 63,800 hectares of winter-spring rice in the three districts of Vinh Thanh, Co Do, and Thoi Lai have been covered by purchase agreements.

Of the 63,800 hectares of winter-spring rice in Can Tho City for the 2023-2024 crop season, approximately 23,600 hectares are large-scale farming areas with 135 models and 14,245 participating households.

Of the 23,600 hectares of this large-scale rice field, 20,482 hectares are covered by guaranteed purchase agreements, while the remaining more than 3,100 hectares are not yet covered.

The majority of the 2023-2024 winter-spring rice crop that has not yet been sold under contract will be sold by farmers to traders.

Regarding the situation where 40,000 hectares of winter-spring rice in Can Tho have not yet been sold under contract, Mr. Ha Vu Son - Director of the Department of Industry and Trade of Can Tho City - said that currently there are businesses in the city capable of purchasing the entire area. Therefore, he hopes that the agricultural sectors of the three districts of Vinh Thanh, Co Do, and Thoi Lai will connect and help farmers sell their rice.

"That's Thien Phat Food Processing Company Limited (Thien Phat Food Processing Company). This company has been purchasing rice from approximately 23,000 hectares of farmers in Thanh Binh district, Dong Thap province for the past three years. The Department of Industry and Trade of Dong Thap province and the Chairman of the People's Committee of Dong Thap province, Pham Thien Nghia, also have great confidence in this company's practices. I myself have also visited Thanh Binh district to investigate the company's rice purchasing and purchasing activities in the field," Mr. Son said.

Mr. Son emphasized that Thien Phat Food Processing Company is very capable, has sufficient warehouses and drying facilities, and is ready to purchase all the produce. He added that with good coordination from the three local authorities, farmers can feel secure in their production, avoiding the situation of having to sell through middlemen and frequently encountering broken agreements.

Mr. Ngo Huu Phat, Director of Thien Phat Food Processing Company, said that in 2023, the total amount of rice purchased by the company was 600,000 tons. This amount is expected to increase in 2024.

"In Dong Thap province, besides Thanh Binh district, the company also buys rice from farmers in several other districts. Specifically in Can Tho City, the company is very eager to receive support to buy rice from areas not yet covered by other businesses in the three districts of Vinh Thanh, Co Do, and Thoi Lai," Mr. Phat said.

At the meeting, the agricultural departments of the three districts of Vinh Thanh, Co Do, and Thoi Lai stated that they will support businesses in connecting with consumers for the 2023-2024 Winter-Spring rice crop.
