5 ways to quickly relieve hemorrhoid pain

VnExpressVnExpress25/01/2024

Maintaining anal hygiene, soaking in warm water, changing diet and lifestyle, exercising, and using medication are ways to quickly improve hemorrhoid pain.

Although not dangerous, hemorrhoids cause many inconveniences and difficulties in bowel movements and daily life for sufferers. Hemorrhoids can stem from many factors such as prolonged sitting, lack of exercise; insufficient water intake; a diet lacking in vegetables and fiber; obesity; pregnancy; chronic constipation or diarrhea, etc.

According to Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Anh Tuan, Head of the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery at Military Central Hospital 108, hemorrhoids, whether internal or external, cause pain, burning, and even bleeding when the hemorrhoidal masses swell. Below are some suggestions that can significantly help patients reduce this condition.

Anal hygiene

Proper anal hygiene is extremely important for patients with hemorrhoids to prevent the spread of bacteria that can lead to infection.

It is important to clean the anal area immediately after defecation and at least twice a day, in the morning and evening before bed, to avoid itching.

Absolutely do not use soap or harsh detergents to clean the anus because they contain ingredients that can easily cause severe irritation and dry out the skin.

Clean water should be used to clean the anus; this helps remove dirt without causing abrasions from friction. Warm water or diluted saline solution can be used. After cleaning the anus with water, gently wipe it with a soft, damp cotton towel or a soft wet cloth.

Specialists recommend that patients with hemorrhoids should clean their anus with clean warm water and then dry it with a soft towel or toilet paper. Scented toilet paper often contains fragrances that can easily irritate the user. Regular toilet paper should not be used as it can easily scratch the anal mucosa, causing pain and potentially worsening hemorrhoids.

Change your underwear at least twice a day; underwear should be breathable, stretchy, and absorbent.

Soak in warm water

Soaking the anal area in warm water can offer many benefits. This method helps to quickly relieve pain and improve local swelling symptoms for patients. It significantly reduces bacteria that can cause infection, limiting the impact of bacteria on hemorrhoids. The heat from the warm water also helps improve blood circulation in the anal area, thereby helping to better control prolapse and swelling of hemorrhoids, preventing them from worsening.

To properly soak in warm water while treating hemorrhoids, you can refer to and follow these steps:

- After heating the water to a warm temperature, add a quantity of salt to the bathwater and stir slowly until the salt is completely dissolved.

- Clean the anal area thoroughly before soaking, then wipe dry with a soft, clean towel.

- Gently immerse the anal area in a basin of warm water for about 15 minutes to reduce pain symptoms. Alternatively, taking a warm bath or soaking in warm water can also provide comfort, relaxation, and pain relief.

- This can be done about 2-3 times a day to help you feel more comfortable.

Diet and lifestyle

While diet and lifestyle changes may not provide immediate pain relief, they can help improve pain symptoms safely in the long term.

Changing and adjusting your diet and lifestyle is considered one of the safest and most natural ways to reduce hemorrhoid pain. Patients should adopt a diet high in fiber, stool softeners, and drink plenty of water.

Exercise

For hemorrhoids, exercise plays a particularly important role in significantly improving blood circulation, helping to shrink the size of the hemorrhoids. In addition, proper exercise combined with scientific treatment methods can help patients achieve the best possible treatment results.

Patients with hemorrhoids are advised to walk, practice yoga, and swim. These are activities that have a positive impact on the health of people with hemorrhoids. In addition, they should avoid activities that put pressure on the abdominal and anal areas, such as weightlifting, sit-ups, and fast running.

Pain relief with medication

Topical or suppositories containing hydrocortisone, antispasmodics, and vascular protectants can quickly soothe pain, reduce swelling, and effectively fight inflammation in mild cases of hemorrhoids.

The most commonly used treatments are Proctolog hemorrhoid cream, Proctolog suppositories (1-2 suppositories per day), or applying Preparation-H ointment to the affected area whenever pain occurs, 3-5 times a day, for immediate pain relief.

However, it should also be noted that topical hemorrhoid pain relievers only provide short-term relief, and prolonged use can lead to drug resistance. Therefore, they should not be overused.
