7 causes of chest pain

VnExpressVnExpress08/07/2023

Breast pain in women can be caused by hormonal changes, breast abscesses, benign tumors or trauma.

Chest pain is common in women. Some causes are benign, but others require medical treatment.

Mastitis

Mastitis is an infection of the breast tissue, which occurs mainly in women who are breastfeeding. It can be related to a blocked milk duct or a bacterial infection in the duct. Infection of the breast tissue can be accompanied by pain, swelling, redness, itching, and a feeling of heat in the breast, sometimes with fever. Usually, only one breast is affected by the symptoms of inflammation. Mastitis can develop into complications such as an abscess, which requires treatment.

Side effects of the drug

Some heart medications, birth control pills, etc. can cause breast pain. These medications may be related to hormonal changes. If a woman is taking these medications and has breast pain, she should talk to her doctor.

Breast cyst

Breast cysts are fluid-filled sacs within the breast. They can be small or large, and can swell or shrink during the menstrual cycle. Breast cysts are common but are usually benign, rarely cancerous.

Hormonal changes

A woman's body goes through a series of hormonal changes each month that are tied to her menstrual cycle. These changes prepare her for pregnancy or remove unwanted tissue when conception does not occur. Just before her period begins, her breasts may feel tender or painful to the touch.

Breast abscess

Breast abscesses are a sign of an infection in the breast tissue that has developed. They can be a complication of mastitis or develop in women who are not breastfeeding. In women who are not breastfeeding, breast abscesses can result from excessive weight gain or nipple piercing.

Breast tumor

Lumps found in the breast can be benign or cancerous. Most changes in breast tissue are benign. Breast pain is rarely a sign of cancer.

Breast trauma

The chest muscles can be bruised or injured just like other parts of the body. Accidents, falls, or sports injuries that directly impact the chest area can cause pain. Signs of decreased swelling or discoloration of the bruise on the chest indicate that the injury is healing. People who lift weights or do exercises that directly impact the chest muscles can also experience pain in this area.

Most causes of breast pain are not serious, such as hormonal changes or some other conditions that will go away on their own without treatment. However, if the pain is persistent, severe, accompanied by redness and swelling in one or both breasts, colored discharge... that does not disappear after a day or two, women should go to the hospital for examination.
