7 causes of chest pain

VnExpressVnExpress08/07/2023

Chest pain in women can be caused by hormonal changes, breast abscesses, benign tumors, or trauma.

Chest pain is common in women. Some causes may be benign, but some may require medical treatment.

Mastitis

Mastitis is an infection of the breast tissue, primarily occurring in breastfeeding women. It can be related to blocked milk ducts or bacterial infection within the ducts. Breast tissue infection may be accompanied by pain, swelling, redness, itching, and a burning sensation in the breast, sometimes accompanied by fever. Usually, only one breast is affected by the inflammatory symptoms. Mastitis can develop into complications such as abscesses, which require treatment.

Side effects of the medication

Some medications for cardiovascular disease, birth control pills, etc., can cause breast pain. This is because these medications may be related to hormonal changes. If women are using these medications and experience breast pain, they should consult their doctor.

Breast cysts

Breast cysts are fluid-filled sacs inside the breast. They can be small or large, and may swell or shrink during the menstrual cycle. Breast cysts are common but are usually benign and rarely cancerous.

Hormonal changes

A woman's body undergoes a series of hormonal changes each month associated with the menstrual cycle. These changes prepare for pregnancy or eliminate unnecessary tissue if conception does not occur. Just before menstruation begins, breasts may feel softer or tender to the touch.

Breast abscess

Breast abscesses are a sign of an ongoing infection in the breast tissue. They can be a complication of mastitis or develop in non-breastfeeding individuals. In non-breastfeeding women, breast abscesses may result from excessive weight gain or nipple piercing.

Breast tumor

Lumps found in the breast can be benign or cancerous. Most changes in breast tissue are benign. Breast pain is rarely a sign of a cancerous lump.

Breast injury

The chest muscles can be bruised or injured just like other parts of the body. Accidents, falls, or sports injuries that directly impact the chest area can cause pain. Signs of reduced swelling or discoloration of bruises on the chest indicate that the injury is healing. People who lift weights or perform exercises that directly impact the chest muscles may also experience pain in this area.

Most causes of breast pain are not serious, such as hormonal changes or other conditions that will resolve on their own without treatment. However, if the pain is persistent, severe, and accompanied by swelling and redness in one or both breasts, or discharge of a color that does not disappear after one or two days, women should seek medical attention.
