This afternoon, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' regular press conference, the press raised concerns about the information that more than 15,000 foreigners, including Vietnamese citizens, have fled to Thailand following a crackdown on online fraud rings by Myanmar authorities.
Regarding the incident, Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Pham Thu Hang stated that, according to the Vietnamese Embassy in Thailand and the Vietnamese Embassy in Myanmar, as of October 22nd, approximately 70 Vietnamese citizens had traveled to Thailand due to a crackdown on online fraud by Myanmar authorities.
The two embassies proactively worked with the relevant authorities in the two host countries to gather information and coordinate screening and verification in accordance with the regulations of the host countries and Vietnamese law.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has instructed Vietnamese diplomatic missions in both countries to immediately coordinate with relevant domestic and local authorities to implement necessary consular procedures and assist in bringing citizens back home as soon as possible.
Commenting further on combating online fraud, the spokesperson said that in recent times, Vietnam has perfected its legal framework and telecommunications and cybersecurity management to create effective tools to prevent violations in cyberspace, aiming for a safe and transparent online environment for the people.
Ms. Hang mentioned that the most important multilateral activity of that year was Vietnam hosting the signing ceremony of the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime.
"Vietnam has clearly demonstrated its commitment to working together with the United Nations and its member states to counter the extremely complex developments in recent times through the opening ceremony of the Hanoi Convention and the recent high-level conferences," the spokesperson said.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, along with other ministries, agencies, and functional bodies of Vietnam, is actively engaging with partner countries to establish cooperation mechanisms aimed at improving the effectiveness of protecting Vietnamese citizens and more effectively combating organized crime and high-tech crime in those countries.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has directed Vietnamese representative agencies abroad to closely monitor the situation, prepare necessary plans, and coordinate closely with domestic and local agencies to promptly implement measures to protect Vietnamese citizens.
