This afternoon, at the regular press conference of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs , the press mentioned information that more than 15,000 foreigners, including Vietnamese citizens, fled to Thailand after a campaign by Myanmar authorities to crack down on online scams.
Regarding the incident, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Pham Thu Hang said that according to the Vietnamese Embassy in Thailand and the Vietnamese Embassy in Myanmar, as of October 22, about 70 Vietnamese citizens had traveled to Thailand due to Myanmar authorities launching a campaign to crack down on online fraud activities.
The two embassies have proactively worked with the authorities of the two host countries to seek information, coordinate screening and verification according to the regulations of the host country and Vietnamese law.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has directed Vietnamese diplomatic agencies in the two countries to immediately coordinate with domestic and local authorities to carry out necessary consular procedures and support the return of citizens as soon as possible.
Commenting further on combating online fraud, the spokesman said that recently, Vietnam has completed the legal framework, telecommunications management and network security to create effective tools to prevent violations in cyberspace, aiming for a safe and transparent network environment for the people.
Ms. Hang mentioned the most important multilateral activity of the year, which was Vietnam hosting the signing ceremony of the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime.
"Vietnam has clearly demonstrated its joint actions with the United Nations and its member states against the extremely complicated developments in recent times through the signing ceremony of the Hanoi Convention and recent high-level conferences," the spokesman said.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, together with other ministries, sectors and Vietnamese authorities, are actively discussing with partner countries to establish a cooperation mechanism to improve the effectiveness of protecting Vietnamese citizens and more effectively combat organized crime and high-tech crime in other countries.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has directed Vietnamese representative agencies abroad to closely monitor the situation, prepare necessary plans, and closely coordinate with domestic and local agencies to promptly deploy citizen protection measures.
