AI - A double-edged sword

The AI boom is creating profound changes in the field of journalism, but also many challenges that the industry faces.

In the digital age, artificial intelligence (AI) is profoundly changing the journalism industry, from production, synthesis to content distribution. Currently, AI not only supports reporters, editors, technicians, etc., but also reshapes the way readers access and interact with information.

Change your approach

In the past, journalism was associated with the image of reporters holding notebooks, recording interviews, and spending hours editing, researching, and perfecting content. However, the rapid development of AI has completely changed this process. Tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Copilot are supporting journalists in suggesting topics, creating rough drafts, editing language, and analyzing big data quickly and effectively.

In Vietnam, Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper is one of the pioneers in promoting innovation and applying technology in the journalism process. In 2024 - the year AI began to explode globally, the Newspaper launched the AI365 column with a virtual MC, clearly showing its technology orientation and strong digital transformation vision.

Not stopping at applying technology, in two consecutive years 2024-2025, the Newspaper also organized a series of internal training courses and seminars on AI in the field of journalism for reporters, editors, technicians, etc. These programs not only help improve professional quality, but also contribute to spreading the spirit of innovation and applying AI widely in the modern journalism environment.

One of the highlights of the training programs at Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper is the discipline and high practical application ability. Speaking at the AI training course organized by Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper in April 2025, journalist Le Cao Cuong, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper, said: "After the advanced training course, each reporter, editor... must proficiently and regularly use at least 2 to 3 specialized AI tools - depending on the nature of each person's work; the process of applying AI to daily work will be considered an important criterion in assessing individual capacity".

Currently, Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper has applied a variety of AI tools in the journalism process, from editing, summarizing text, standardizing SEO content to producing news videos with virtual voices and automatic editors. AI is also used to analyze data, identify trends and predict reader behavior. In addition, podcast news has integrated AI in the reading and audio processing. Notably, some articles have had the participation of AI, showing the editorial office's commitment to innovation and technology adaptation in the digital age.

Internationally, many large newsrooms have also quickly integrated AI into their operations. For example, The Washington Post has used the Heliograf system to create short, accurate news stories in real time. Reuters has developed the Lynx Insight tool to analyze data and suggest article ideas, helping reporters save time in the research process...

Ms. Pham Quynh Anh (living in Ho Chi Minh City), a young reader, believes that the bold application of AI technology by newsrooms has contributed to bringing a new look to modern journalism. "I see that newsrooms, including Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper, use virtual MCs to present news professionally, with increasingly vivid AI illustrations, along with modern, intuitive graphics and charts that make information easier to understand and more attractive. These innovations clearly meet the readers' need for fast, multi-format access to information," she said.

Although AI can now synthesize and provide information quickly, Ms. Quynh Anh still chooses to read mainstream newspapers as a priority information channel. According to her, the core and differentiating values of journalism lie in thorough verification, analytical capacity and social responsibility - factors that can only be guaranteed by a team of professional journalists.

Inevitable trend

The above examples show that AI today not only plays the role of a technical tool, but has become an inevitable trend in the content development strategy and operational organization of modern newsrooms.

According to Dr. Luong Dong Son, lecturer at the Institute of Journalism and Communication (Academy of Journalism and Communication), we need to frankly acknowledge that AI is putting the journalism industry in front of a turning point in its reshaping. This impact is two-sided, both an opportunity and a huge challenge.

On the positive side, AI is a powerful assistant if we know how to master it. AI has the ability to free journalists from mechanical, time-consuming tasks such as: removing tapes, synthesizing raw information... so that they can focus on the most quintessential part of the job: critical thinking, in-depth investigation and creating stories with humanistic value.

In particular, with its ability to analyze big data, AI opens up the era of "data journalism", helping the press to explore macro stories hidden behind numbers that are difficult for humans to do. However, the challenges are also very real. AI can be abused to produce fake news at a sophisticated level, directly threatening the purity of the information space. From an internal perspective, over-reliance on AI can lead to the risk of "pen wear", eroding the ability to think independently and the creative identity of journalists.

"Therefore, the key is that AI must always be a tool, while the intelligence, courage and ethics of journalists must be the masters. We must take advantage of its power to improve the quality of journalism, not let it replace or weaken the core values of the profession," said Mr. Son.

Along with that, Mr. Le Hong Duc, founder of OneAds Digital Company Limited, said that AI is strongly empowering the journalism industry through "AI agents for Journalism". Tools such as OpenAI Deep Research or similar systems from Google can automate the process of data collection, writing the first draft, checking information, thereby helping journalists focus more on in-depth investigative content and contextual analysis.

"AI is helping small or under-resourced newsrooms access advanced working methods that were previously nearly impossible: in-depth research, continuous monitoring, complex data analysis, and the production of high-quality digital journalism products. If applied skillfully and intelligently, AI can significantly improve the quality of journalism," said Mr. Duc.

According to experts, the strong development of AI poses an urgent requirement for journalists: to constantly improve their technological and professional skills, to control and select information among the "forest" of data created by AI. More importantly, journalists need to maintain their professional responsibility, providing information to readers quickly - accurately - responsibly - humanely. This is also the criterion that Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper has persistently pursued for many years.

A skill of journalism

Mr. Hoang Dao, Chairman of Vietnam Innovation Ecosystem, said that AI is bringing many new opportunities but also many challenges to the journalism industry. Currently, AI can support very quickly and effectively in choosing topics, searching for data or suggesting content, helping to optimize the workload. However, if too dependent on this tool, journalists will easily lose critical thinking, no longer practice the ability to observe reality and, more seriously, lack a foundation of knowledge.

"I have met some young people who write very quickly thanks to AI, but when asked in depth, they do not understand the context and do not have clear opinions. I think AI should be considered a supporting skill for journalism. Those who can use technology while still maintaining their own perspective, still knowing how to select and write with their own thinking are truly journalists in the new era," said Mr. Dao.
