According to VOV, 22 students from Vietnamese junior and senior high schools beat 3,500 contestants from 21 Asian countries and territories to win prizes in the 2025 Asian Mathematical Olympiad (AIMO) recently held in Japan. What surprised both the organizers and the participating international delegations was that the Vietnamese team, with the fewest participants, achieved a 100% success rate in winning prizes.

Sharing his feelings about his glorious achievement, champion Phan Thanh Huy, an 11th-grade student from Hanoi -Amsterdam High School for Gifted Students, said: “Initially, I only aimed for a high prize, but I didn't expect to win the top prize. I was very surprised and happy.”

Gold medalist Tran Son Ha, a 6th-grade student from Dang Thai Mai Junior High School in Vinh City (formerly), shared: “The exam was very difficult, and I felt surprised and nervous. After the exam and learning that I had won a gold medal, I was very surprised and emotional.”

The organizers of this year's competition also highly appreciate the abilities of the Vietnamese contestants, and believe that this is a good starting point for young Vietnamese people to continue to shine in the world of mathematics in the future.

The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is an annual competition organized by the International AIMO Executive Committee – the Asian Mathematical Olympiad Association – since 2012. AIMO is one of the leading and most prestigious international mathematics competitions in English in the region. More than 20 countries and territories participate, including China, Singapore, South Korea, Malaysia, Iran, India, and others.

A unique feature of AIMO is that the exam is entirely in English and divided into three sections with increasing difficulty, requiring candidates not only to have a solid grasp of mathematical knowledge but also to be able to analyze, critique, and explain problems using logical thinking and academic language.

Vietnam has participated in AIMO since 2019 and quickly established its position with hundreds of medals. According to statistics, Vietnamese students have won more than 200 international medals in AIMO competitions.
