Amazon Web Services (AWS) is quietly providing AI platforms for a series of police surveillance systems in the US and many other countries. Forbes revealed that AWS has developed an AI prototype that can detect weapons and send alerts with coordinates to authorities in real time.
Although not directly contracted, Amazon is behind many surveillance projects through partners like Nomad Media and Flock Safety. Technologies like Rekognition, audio sensors and license plate recognition cameras help Amazon penetrate this $110 billion sector.
At the same time, experts warn of the risk of privacy invasion when police can access people's videos without a court order. The Rekognition system was controversial when it misidentified 28 US congressmen, most of whom were people of color, according to testing by the ACLU. Additionally, network-connected monitoring systems can become targets of attack, leading to sensitive data leaks.
Researchers warn that over-reliance on AI could create an “illusion of security”, obscuring the root causes of crime. Dear readers, please watch more videos: Iris scanning tool to verify human identity | VTV24
