According to three sources close to the New York Times on April 2, Amazon made a last-minute offer to buy TikTok, as April 5 is the deadline for the video app to separate from its Chinese parent company ByteDance, or face a permanent ban in the US market.
However, some parties involved in the negotiations do not consider Amazon's proposal serious. Amazon's proposal letter was sent to US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick. The White House confirmed that it received the proposal on April 2, but did not disclose the specific value of the proposal.
Amazon's move represents a last-minute scramble in Washington over TikTok's ownership, with lawmakers from both parties concerned that Chinese ownership of TikTok could pose a national security risk.
Although President Trump has criticized TikTok as a potential national security threat, he has repeatedly said he wants to "save" the app.
Previously, the US Congress passed a law requiring TikTok to separate from its Chinese parent company or face being banned from operating in the US. TikTok sued the Supreme Court, but the court upheld the decision. However, Mr. Trump decided to delay the implementation of the law until April 5, giving TikTok more time to find a solution.
Currently, neither TikTok nor Amazon has given an official response to this information.
According to the New York Times , on April 2, President Trump met with White House officials to discuss the fate of TikTok.
The administration may be considering an alternative, such as bringing in additional U.S. investors, including Oracle Corp. and Blackstone Group, rather than an outright sale, sources said, but it remains unclear whether that option would meet federal law.
TikTok is believed to have close ties to Amazon, as the video app has 170 million users in the US and has become a major shopping hub for the retail giant. Many TikTok influencers have promoted products and encouraged users to buy from Amazon.
While Amazon is not the first company to be interested in TikTok, it is the most prominent partner in this bidding, alongside Employer.com - a company founded by billionaires Frank McCourt and Jesse Tinsley.
Also on April 2, a company called Zoop, led by entrepreneur Tim Stokely - founder of adult website OnlyFans - said it had made an offer to buy TikTok's operations in the US. Zoop said it had partnered with a cryptocurrency organization and was in contact with the White House about its plans.
TikTok, however, has been adamant that the company is not for sale, in part because the Chinese government would block any deal involving the app.
