Amazon is facing a major paradox: it spends $200 billion on AI and data center infrastructure, yet many employees are using internal AI tools to create meaningless tasks simply to boost their KPIs on technology usage rankings.

According to Fortune and the Financial Times, Amazon's MeshClaw tool, originally designed to automate tasks such as code deployment, email processing, and Slack management, has now become a "weapon" for employees to burn AI tokens in order to improve their personal ranking within the internal tracking system.

This phenomenon is known as "tokenmaxxing," a term spreading in Silicon Valley, describing how employees intentionally create as many interactions with AI as possible to boost usage metrics instead of focusing on the actual value for the product and the business.

Internal sources reveal that Amazon is aiming for over 80% of its developers to use AI weekly, while also implementing a leaderboard to track individual and team token consumption, creating unprecedented competitive pressure in the tech workplace.

Although Amazon claims that token metrics are not used to evaluate employee performance, many engineers say that management is still secretly monitoring these numbers, leading many to intentionally let AI handle a multitude of unnecessary tasks just to "beautify" their achievements.

MeshClaw is described as an "AI monster" capable of self-learning, monitoring code deployment progress, and handling tasks automatically when users are offline, but this also raises serious concerns about security risks and system control.

Some veteran engineers at Amazon even said they were hesitant to give AI full control for fear that the tool could perform unintended actions, cause system errors, or leak critical data in a large-scale operational environment.

Amidst Amazon's aggressive push into the global AI race, the story of "creating work with bots" is becoming a major warning for the tech industry: if corporations focus too much on flashy metrics like token sales, they could turn hundreds of billions of dollars in investment into an illusory KPI race.
