Durian contains many times more kcal than other fruits, so is eating 5 durian segments a day too much? (Nhu, 27 years old, Ho Chi Minh City).

Reply:

Durian offers many health benefits. It contains the amino acid tryptophan, which helps produce the neurotransmitter serotonin, creating feelings of happiness, calmness, and relaxation, thus improving mood.

Durian also contains a high amount of potassium, which is good for blood circulation and beneficial for people with high blood pressure. The plant compounds in durian help lower cholesterol levels and prevent atherosclerosis, thus reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. In addition, durian contains beneficial plant compounds such as carotenoids, anthocyanins, polyphenols, and flavonoids, which have antioxidant properties.

100g of durian provides 24% of the daily vitamin C requirement, helping to boost the body's immunity and improve the function of white blood cells. Additionally, vitamin C helps increase collagen production, which is good for skin, hair, and nails.

However, if you eat durian daily, you should be aware that it is very nutritious, with 147 kcal per 100g. An average durian segment (about 250g) provides approximately 367 kcal. The recommended daily serving of durian for an average person is about 4 segments. Eating too much of this fruit can cause bloating, constipation, gas, and flatulence, so you should limit your intake.

People with diabetes should limit their durian consumption, eating only 1-2 segments at a time. People with kidney failure or those undergoing dialysis should avoid durian. Durian should not be combined with alcohol, as this can lead to vomiting, headaches, and other unwanted reactions.
