(NLĐO) - Coming from a disadvantaged family, the two brothers wanted to improve themselves and dedicate their youth to the Fatherland, so they volunteered to join the army.

The approximately 60m2 apartment in Hoa An ward, Cam Le district, Da Nang city, is where twin brothers Nguyen Chi Chan and Nguyen Chi Chinh (born in 2007) live with their mother and older brother.

Before the Lunar New Year of 2025, Chấn and Chỉnh volunteered for military service and were selected. Receiving orders to depart on February 13th, both brothers experienced mixed emotions before leaving their family.

On the morning of February 8th, Chấn woke up earlier than usual. On the small table in the living room, his mother had left a few hastily written notes before going to work, along with two 50,000 dong banknotes.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Oanh (born in 1982), the mother of Chan and Chinh, instructed her children not to go anywhere because it was raining. With 100,000 dong, Ms. Oanh told her three children to spend 60,000 dong on breakfast and use the rest to buy food for lunch.

Ms. Oanh divorced her husband when Chấn and Chỉnh were just one year old. Her eldest son was only a little over two years old at the time. To raise her three children, she worked various jobs. In recent years, she has been working as a part-time housekeeper and has a more stable income.

The two brothers hoped to improve themselves during their time in the military.

Knowing how hard their mother worked, Chấn, Chỉnh, and their older brother were all well-behaved and obedient. Their older brother is currently attending supplementary classes. Chấn and Chỉnh dropped out of school after finishing 9th grade. During this time, the two brothers sometimes worked as laborers at a paper-making facility for votive offerings, and other times helped their mother with hourly cleaning to earn extra income.

When they turned 18 and had learned about the military environment, Chấn and Chỉnh discussed volunteering to enlist. Their mother, Oanh, supported their decision.

The hastily written letter from Mrs. Oanh before going to work on the morning of February 8th, addressed to her three sons, included 100,000 dong.

Chấn said he had seen videos online about the environment and discipline in the military, so he wanted to be trained in that field. Chỉnh said he wanted to dedicate a part of his youth to the task of protecting the homeland. Besides that, joining the military is also a way for both brothers to train themselves, become more mature and responsible.

After the Lunar New Year, the two brothers took time off from work to prepare for their military service. Every day, they divided up the chores to help their mother with household tasks. With the remaining 40,000 dong, Chấn and Chỉnh went to the market together to buy vegetables and tofu to cook lunch for the whole family.

Chấn's mother praised his cooking. Both of them learned to cook for themselves when they were still in elementary school.

Ms. Oanh also shared that when she received her two sons' enlistment notices, she felt "very emotional, it's hard to describe." "Happy because my sons are about to enter a new phase, which will surely bring them better experiences. Happy because at the same time, I have two sons serving the country. A little sad because I will have to be away from them for a long time," Ms. Oanh said.

These days, every evening she spends time advising her two sons to cultivate independence, discipline, and seriousness when they join the military. In particular, she hopes they will always try their best and complete their assigned tasks well.

Chấn and Chỉnh each harbored their own aspirations for future careers. Chấn wanted to learn bartending, while Chỉnh wanted to learn car repair. "Our dream after completing our military service is to learn a trade so we can help our mother with her burdens and support her in her old age," Chấn shared.

According to Mr. Le Minh Nam, Commander of the Hoa An Ward Military Command, regulations state that if two brothers from the same family undergo the military service examination together, only one will be selected. The other brother is entitled to a temporary deferment until the first brother completes the examination.

However, in the case of Chấn and Chỉnh, both applied to volunteer for military service and were selected. The two brothers were assigned to the 971st Regiment under the Da Nang City Military Command.

"The two young men are very enthusiastic and determined to fulfill their duties. The ward officials visited their families to offer encouragement before they left for military service," Mr. Nam said. In 2025, Hoa An ward has 50 successful candidates for military service, exceeding the assigned quota.
