On Weibo, leaker Ice Universe shared real-life photos of a foldable iPhone (tentatively called the iPhone Ultra). The device is believed to have entered its first phase of mass production and is expected to launch in September of this year.
Although the article translates to English with the word "prototype," MacRumors suggests that it is most likely just a model and not a functional prototype.
Based on the leaked images, the iPhone Ultra has an elongated aspect ratio when unfolded, with an outer screen that is nearly square in shape. Previously, rumors suggested the inner screen would be roughly the size of an iPad mini, while the outer screen would be comparable to a smaller iPhone.
The iPhone Ultra in the photo is white. Back in February, Instant Digital reported that this was the only confirmed color for the device.
According to Bloomberg analyst Mark Gurman, Apple intends to "avoid flashy colors," opting instead for traditional colors like silver, black, or gray on the iPhone Ultra. This approach is similar to the iPhone X launched in 2017, which came in silver and space gray.
Some rumors suggest the iPhone Ultra will also come in two color options. Besides white, Macworld , citing internal sources in the supply chain, predicts the other color could be similar to the dark blue option of the iPhone 17 Pro.
Limited color options may indicate low production volumes of the iPhone Ultra. In December 2025, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo warned that manufacturing difficulties could limit product supply at least until the end of this year. Having more color options would increase complexity and cost.
Also on June 1st, leaker Fixed Focus Digital stated that the iPhone Ultra will feature vapor chamber cooling technology. This technology was previously used by Apple on the iPhone 17 Pro.
When launching the iPhone 17 Pro, Apple claimed that this system helps dissipate heat more effectively from the A19 Pro chip and distribute it throughout the unibody aluminum frame. This design resulted in 40% more stable performance when running demanding tasks compared to the graphite heat sink on its predecessor.

According to Bloomberg , Apple is under pressure to differentiate itself with foldable smartphones. The first iPhone with the new design is expected to be unveiled in September, seven years after rival Samsung launched the first Galaxy Z Fold.
During development, Apple concluded that the two biggest drawbacks of current foldable smartphones are the limited screen space and the easily visible crease. Overcoming these issues is not simple, causing the company to enter the segment much later than its competitors.
In early May, Instant Digital stated that the finished hinges did not meet standards, causing difficulties in iPhone Ultra production. However, Fixed Focus Digital argued that the problem stemmed from SMT (Surface Mount Technology), a technology that directly attaches components to the circuit board, allowing for a more compact internal component design.
In April, DigiTimes reported that iPhone Ultra production was about 1-2 months behind schedule, but still in time for Apple to unveil it in September.
According to Gurman, the iPhone Ultra is expected to feature a 7.8-inch internal display, a 5.5-inch external display, an A20 processor, a C2 network modem, and two rear cameras, with a price tag of around $2,000 .
