Arsenal are entering the summer transfer window with a decisive move, clearly showing their desire to end their 21-year Premier League title drought. Coach Mikel Arteta's team has spent around £200 million ($269 million) to strengthen all three lines, including the appearance of quality recruits such as Viktor Gyokeres, Martin Zubimendi and Noni Madueke.
However, in parallel with the wave of strong shopping, Arsenal is facing the problem of financial balance. Letting Jorginho, Kieran Tierney, Takehiro Tomiyasu and Thomas Partey leave without any transfer fee is putting pressure on the team's leadership to cut the wage bill and find a source of compensation.
One of the big questions Arsenal need to address right now is the future of Kai Havertz. Last season, the German international was unexpectedly trusted by Arteta to play the role of a "false 9", scoring 9 goals in 23 appearances before suffering a hamstring injury. However, Havertz's performances have not been convincing enough to warrant a starting spot, especially when Arsenal's attack is increasingly crowded.
The imminent arrival of Viktor Gyokeres, a genuine and powerful centre-forward, is likely to push Havertz’s role to the sidelines. With the No. 10 and the two wings already well-established, it is becoming harder to justify keeping Havertz in the starting lineup, if not to say it is time for him to leave for a more suitable destination.
Similarly, Leandro Trossard is in a difficult position. Since joining from Brighton in January 2023, the Belgian has been a reliable backup, especially in Havertz's absence, scoring six goals in the final eight games of the Premier League season. However, with fierce competition on both wings and in the middle, Trossard's position is no longer guaranteed.
At 30 years old and with just one year left on his contract, this could be the right time for Arsenal to consider selling Trossard for a reasonable financial return, especially with both Fenerbahce (Türkiye) and Bayern Munich (Germany) showing serious interest.
Despite the heavy spending, streamlining the squad and ensuring personnel efficiency are key factors for Arsenal to realize their dream of winning the title. Decisions on the futures of Havertz and Trossard will be an important test of Arteta's mettle and long-term vision in building a team with depth and the ability to compete in all competitions next season.
