On September 19th, search giant Google announced that its chatbot Bard would be updated with features such as matching answers and analyzing users' personal data, aiming to catch up with ChatGPT in terms of popularity.
ChatGPT is a chatbot developed by OpenAI, a startup backed by Microsoft, which has sparked a race to integrate AI into products and services across the technology industry.
At the time of its launch, this chatbot was the fastest-growing consumer application in internet history and is now among the top 30 most popular websites in the world .
Meanwhile, Bard hasn't had the same "buzz" as its competitor. According to analytics firm Similiarweb, as of the end of August 2023, Google's chatbot had only 183 million visits, which is only 13% of ChatGPT's.
To close the gap with competitors in the AI field, Google is releasing extensions for Bard AI, allowing users to import their data across applications, initially including products within the same Google ecosystem. For example, customers can ask Bard to search for documents in Google Drive, or generate a summary report of their Gmail inbox.
Google's senior product manager, Jack Krawczyk, said that currently Bard users can only retrieve data between Google apps, but the company is working with other external companies to connect their apps with chatbots in the future.
Another new feature has been updated to mitigate the "illusion" problem often encountered with large language models. "Illusion" refers to inaccurate or fabricated responses from AI. Accordingly, Bard users can see how the chatbot's response matches or differs from Google's search results.
“We are building an AI chatbot that is capable of admitting insecurity about answers it is unsure of,” Krawczyk said, explaining that the overarching idea is to enhance user trust in the generative AI, coupled with Bard’s accountability.
Finally, the third new feature allows users to invite others to join conversations with the AI chatbot.
