Daytime resident doctor delivers babies, nighttime MC at a bar.

Pursuing both a career as a doctor and a bar MC simultaneously, Nguyen Van Tung says the hardest thing isn't the work pressure, but maintaining self-discipline.

Around midnight on a Friday night, amidst the pulsating music from the DJ booth, Nguyen Van Tung (born in 1999) continuously livened up the atmosphere in the bar with shouts and interactions with the audience below.

Tung's witty and rhyming chants were well-received by many, further heightening the excitement. At times, he playfully adjusted the sound on the DJ booth, creating moments of teasing for the audience.

It was past 1 AM when Tung finally stepped off the stage, preparing to leave as his shift ended. The next day, he usually takes advantage of the time to rest before preparing for another day of work at the hospital. There, instead of being MC Hype Doctor T, Tung "switches roles" as resident doctor Nguyen Van Tung, specializing in Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Thai Nguyen University.

"Many people say I'm like living 'two lives' at the same time, doing two seemingly unrelated jobs. For me, one is my passionate major, and the other is an opportunity to hone many soft skills while earning extra income and relieving mental stress," Tung told Tri Thuc - Znews.

By day she wears a white blouse, by night she holds a microphone.

From a young age, becoming a doctor has always been Nguyen Van Tung's passion and career goal.

In 2017, he passed the entrance exam for Preventive Medicine at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Thai Nguyen University. After a year, he decided to retake the exam for the Faculty of Medicine, Hanoi University of Business and Technology.

In 2024, after graduating, Tung continued to take the residency exam and passed, specializing in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Thai Nguyen University, and has been undergoing training there to this day.

Regarding how he got into the job of MC Hype (a host who specializes in energizing and maintaining a lively atmosphere at music events, bars, etc.), Tung recounted that when he was a student, he worked part-time as an MC for several programs and events, both to earn extra income to cover tuition fees and to hone his communication skills.

However, due to his busy daytime schedule of studying and clinical work at the hospital, he rarely had the opportunity to take on jobs. Then, one day, a friend invited him to a bar, and he learned about the job of MC Hype. He became interested, researched it, and has been working in it ever since.

"It might sound unrelated, but the MC environment involves interacting with many people, so my soft skills and communication abilities have improved significantly. As a result, my thinking, reasoning skills, and vocabulary are much better suited for explaining and examining patients," he said.

Tung used to be a Hype MC at events and bars.

Recently, images of Tung "in a white coat during the day, holding a microphone at night" have gone viral on social media. Many of his patients who saw them expressed surprise, not expecting that the young doctor who daily goes to the wards and examines patients is actually the MC Hype.

Meanwhile, family and friends, who had known that Tung had been working in both fields for some time, were supportive and often sent him encouraging messages.

On social media, many people are curious why Tung, a medical student known for being busy and rarely having much free time, has managed to pursue another job.

"No matter how busy they are, medical students still need to eat, sleep, live, and rest; they can't just study and study. For me, working at the bar is like a recharging station. I often hear customers say they go to the bar to have fun, but I've never seen anyone go there to be sad. So the next day, I feel quite happy and refreshed before going to the hospital," he shared.

    Learn how to balance

Of course, pursuing two jobs simultaneously, one that takes place day and night, especially in the specialized field of healthcare, is not a simple task.

Initially, Tung was overwhelmed and almost had to quit his MC job due to stress. However, thanks to encouragement and advice from friends, he gradually resolved the issues, developed a more specific plan, and became more disciplined.

"My on-call schedule might overlap with my show schedule, but I still try to optimize both. However, if I have to choose between the two, of course I would prioritize on-call if I can't arrange it, so as not to affect my main job," he said.

However, there were times when Tung experienced the feeling of "working non-stop" for 72 hours. That time, after working a day shift from Friday to Saturday morning, he drove to Hanoi to attend the opening of a friend's clinic, then worked as an MC for an event in the city center in the afternoon. In the evening, he continued as a Hype MC for an event in Bac Ninh. At 10 PM, he returned to Thai Nguyen to be on duty the next morning.

"There are times when things get a bit hectic, but it's very rare," he said, adding that he usually follows a specific schedule to maintain stability.

Accordingly, Tùng rarely works as an MC during the week. As a resident doctor, he spends his days at the hospital from 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM examining and treating patients with doctors in his department. 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM is for exercise, and 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM is for personal activities and studying. From 10:00 PM to 11:30 PM, he may or may not take on MC jobs, usually lasting about 1-1.5 hours. On Fridays, he can take on a maximum of 2-3 jobs, working from 10:00 PM to 1:45 AM before resting the next day.

When Tùng shares images of his "two lives" on social media, he often receives many comments from young people who share similar aspirations of pursuing multiple things at the same time. He often expresses that focusing on ability, energy, and self-discipline is the most important thing.

"Energy is something that can be created and depleted, so you need to balance your energy throughout the day. Along with that, clearly define which tasks are primary and which are secondary. You need good self-discipline to maintain everything," he said.
