According to Yonhap News Agency, July 15th is the deadline for the South Korean government to persuade medical interns, who left their workplaces in late February to protest healthcare reforms, to return to hospitals due to the September recruitment deadline for medical interns.
However, there are few signs that these doctors will return to work as hospitals prepare to finalize their resignation requests. The South Korean government has stated that if the trainee doctors do not respond, they will be automatically dismissed.
Last week, the South Korean government decided to withdraw all penalties imposed on medical interns who failed to comply with the order to return to work.
More than 12,000 medical interns, representing over 90% of all medical interns in South Korea, have gone on strike in the form of mass resignations since February 20th to protest the government's increase in medical school enrollment quotas.
