What are the harms of drinking water not enough and not properly?
Specialist Doctor Nguyen Tran Nhu Thuy, University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City - Branch 3 said that according to traditional medicine, drinking water is not only to quench thirst, but also to nourish internal organs, regulate yin and yang, and protect body fluids - important factors to keep the body healthy and adapt to the weather.
Body fluids are the essence of drinking water and food, and play a role in nourishing the internal organs, cooling and lubricating the body. When you do not drink enough water, body fluids are depleted, easily causing dry throat, constant thirst, mouth ulcers, dizziness, lightheadedness, and heatstroke.
Drinking too little water or drinking it incorrectly can cause spleen and stomach dysfunction. This can lead to consequences such as poor appetite, poor digestion, loose or dry stools, loss of appetite, and prolonged fatigue.

Hot and humid weather, if not properly hydrated, can easily cause fever, headache, heatstroke and even heat stroke.
So how to drink water properly and enough?
Avoid drinking water while eating, immediately after a meal or when the stomach is too full : Drinking water while eating or immediately after a meal can dilute digestive juices, affecting the absorption of nutrients. Instead, wait about 30 minutes after a meal to drink water. This helps the digestive system work more effectively and maintains the balance of fluids in the body.
Drink throughout the day, don't wait until you're thirsty to drink : Instead of drinking a large glass at once, drink water in small sips (about 150-200 ml at a time) and spread it out throughout the day. This helps the body absorb it slowly, doesn't shock the digestive system, and ensures the necessary amount of water is preserved over time.

Use warm water or boiled water that has cooled down, avoid cold water : According to traditional medicine, water helps to cool down and lubricate the body. Drinking warm water (about 20-30°C) helps the body absorb easily, does not cause contraction of internal organs like when suddenly drinking too cold water, avoids imbalance of yin and yang. This is especially important for the elderly who have weak digestive systems and children who drink cold water which can easily harm the spleen and stomach.
Start your day with a glass of warm water : After a long night, your body has lost water through breathing and sweat. The spleen and stomach are likened to the body's stove, drinking cold water on your head is like throwing water on the stove. A glass of warm water in the morning not only helps to replenish lost water but also stimulates digestion, creates a favorable environment for blood circulation and balances yin and yang in the body, helping to prepare the digestive system to welcome the new day.

Note the appropriate dosage for your physical condition.
Dr. Thuy said that maintaining a stable amount of water will help prevent disorders such as electrolyte imbalance, leading to digestive disorders or fatigue. The elderly should limit drinking too much water at one time because their bodies are less flexible in regulating fluid levels. The elderly often have kidney failure and weak spleen and stomach, so they should drink warm water, drink small sips, and avoid drinking late at night, which causes nocturia.
Children should also drink slowly, avoid drinking quickly, because their internal organs are still immature, so they should use warm water or slightly cooled water, not ice cold water or too much cold water. Prioritize water from soup, porridge, natural fruit. People with cold constitution (weak stomach) should drink warm water, can add ginger slices.
People with heat in their body (or heat, mouth ulcers) should drink cool drinks such as pennywort, squash, chrysanthemum juice... In addition, you can choose some types of drinks that have the properties of clearing heat, nourishing yin, and generating body fluids such as roasted black bean water, corn silk water, kudzu root water, chrysanthemum water, vegetable soup, and juicy fruits to help cool from the inside.
"Maintaining the habit of drinking water properly will help the body eliminate heat, detoxify and reduce the risk of diseases related to high temperatures. Therefore, it is necessary to pay attention to drinking enough water and in the right way," Dr. Thuy shared.
