Baidu has enough AI chips in reserve to develop the Ernie model.

Mr. Li believes that the amount of chips the company has in stock, as well as alternative chip models, will be sufficient to support many AI applications for users. While not disclosing details about potential alternative chip sources, the Baidu CEO said they are not as advanced as chips from the US. The CEO of Baidu recently stated that some companies in China have stockpiled semiconductors and built intelligent computing centers early on to support their plans to create their own AI platforms. Furthermore, Mr. Li suggested that US sanctions will inevitably impact the pace of AI development and could lead to the consolidation of Chinese AI companies.

Chinese tech giants like Alibaba and Tencent are also concerned that their cloud computing businesses will be affected by US restrictions. Alibaba has already temporarily suspended its plans to list Alibaba Cloud due to uncertainty about the situation.

In March 2023, Baidu introduced Ernie, becoming the first major technology company in China to compete with ChatGPT. Three months after its launch, Ernie Bot successfully attracted 70 million users, Li said, adding that the company is processing tens of millions of queries daily and thousands of businesses have adopted Baidu's AI service.

Currently, Baidu's revenue from AI generation is still insignificant. However, Mr. Li predicts Ernie will help boost advertising revenue by hundreds of millions of yuan in Q4 2023. Baidu's AI-focused business and product strategy will lay the groundwork for sustainable revenue and profit expansion for many years with the Ernie ecosystem and Ernie Bot. Increased revenue from AI products could help Baidu grow rapidly despite the challenging economic situation in China. The company reported Q3 revenue of $4.7 billion, a 6% increase year-on-year, slightly higher than analysts' estimates.
