Initially, we thought of love as a story of slaying evil dragons or subduing ferocious demons – the very strength that kept us safe in the secure embrace of our loved one. As we grew older, our hearts cracked or even broken a few times, we realized that love might just be a form of currency, something to be valued and exchanged, while what we truly desired might remain a mystery.
We begin to wonder: Does love truly exist? The truth is, love is a multitude of small moments wrapped in an endless series of actions we choose to show someone, time and time again, that we care about them.
Love is both a noun and a verb. It's the tears that soak the soft flannel shirt of the one we love when we surrender to life's chaos, it's the laughter at two in the morning in the dark that makes our stomachs ache while the world outside is asleep. Love is both an emotion and an action, a way to express the deepest feelings in our souls that we have for the other person.
But love means much more than that. It's a relentless driving force that pushes us to become better – and encourages the other person to become the same. Love is the means by which we learn, grow, and evolve into a better and wiser version of ourselves.
In reality, love is the means by which we learn how to build relationships with ourselves, with others, and with the world. No one is born knowing the rules for successful relationships or the tools we need to build happiness. Instead, we have to pay the price for that lesson. Through trial and error, we not only learn what love is but also what it feels like when we sincerely practice it.
We've mistakenly believed that love is simply a relationship with someone. In reality, there are three stages of love that we must go through until we reach our most perfect selves. Just as we aren't born running, we rarely experience complete and lasting love the first time around.
Instead, we are destined to go through crises, sadness, and egoistic desires in order to overcome our own preconceived notions about love and discover what true love really is.
Sometimes I wonder if, when I met my third love, we were younger, before marriage, or before having children, if he and I could have overcome all dogma and gone straight to happiness. But in my own reflection, I realize that for me, and I suspect for all of us, that wouldn't have been possible because I wasn't the person he needed to be, allowing him/her to return to their best selves.
I look back on my loves, and each one was not only different, but they also brought forth different versions of myself, and the wish that first love might be the only one that sounds sweet, but the truth is that's rarely how love works.
Love comes like a flood when we least expect it; it doesn't come to make our lives easier or to soothe our ambitions, but to help us complete our journey back home, back to ourselves.
Because love is the force that makes the universe spin; the beat of our hearts, the feeling of a soul-filled kiss, and the fulfillment of everyone's shared desire to be known, appreciated, and cared for as they truly are.
Love doesn't care about superficial embellishments; it only focuses on what is genuine. Love is the driving force that propels us forward, helps us grow, and elevates even the limits of our own understanding. Love makes us better people.
Love is not simply all that remains... Love is everything.
