What's Elon Musk's roommate doing now?

Once Elon Musk's roommate and a key figure at Tesla, Robin Ren has now left the height of his fame to embark on a new entrepreneurial journey in Shanghai.

In 1992, in a dorm room at the University of Pennsylvania (USA), two young men regularly stayed up all night debating rockets, quantum mechanics, and the future of humanity. One was Elon Musk, the other was Robin Ren – a quiet Shanghai exchange student, a true physics genius.

More than three decades later, one has become the richest tech billionaire on the planet, while the other has quietly played a pivotal role behind Tesla's crucial decisions in the Chinese market. Remarkably, this introverted man is one of the rare individuals Elon Musk genuinely respected since his student days.

In his autobiography, the American billionaire once admitted: "Robin Ren was the only one who was better at physics than me."

Given Elon Musk's notoriously arrogant personality and unwavering self-confidence, this statement is seen as a rare recognition for his former roommate.

Robin Ren is a notable name in the tech world thanks to his excellent academic background and close relationship with Elon Musk. Having won a gold medal at the 1991 International Physics Olympiad, he went on to earn three bachelor's degrees simultaneously from the University of Pennsylvania before earning a master's degree from Stanford University.

In 2015, Robin Ren officially joined Tesla. He was quickly appointed Global Vice President of Business and the Asia-Pacific region. The year 2018 proved to be the most challenging period in Tesla's history.

The Model 3 line faced a severe production crisis, pushing the company to the brink of running out of cash. In this dire situation, Robin Ren delivered a historic turning point for the American electric car manufacturer.

Instead of using conventional commercial arguments, he employed a negotiation strategy based on technical logic. He successfully convinced the Shanghai authorities of the long-term benefits of an electric vehicle supply chain. As a result, Tesla was granted permission to build the Giga Shanghai megafactory as the first 100% foreign-owned automotive enterprise in China.

The factory's rapid completion and commissioning in less than a year directly saved Tesla from the brink of bankruptcy.

However, in 2020, amidst Tesla's soaring stock and the company's peak of fame, he unexpectedly decided to resign. After a period of silence, he returned to Shanghai in 2024 to establish Bio-Carbon Technology Company. This new enterprise focuses entirely on technology for trapping carbon directly from the atmosphere.

The core objective of the project is to transform greenhouse gases into commercially valuable products. This technology aims to convert CO2 into sustainable aviation fuels and basic chemical raw materials.

Mr. Ren chose Shanghai as his headquarters because it possesses one of the most complete chemical industry supply chains, low-cost energy sources, and the superior technical execution capabilities of its local engineering team.

Robin Ren's new journey reflects a completely different philosophy of life and perspective compared to his old friend Elon Musk. While the American billionaire is aiming for the skies with ambitions to conquer Mars, Ren has chosen to stay on Earth. He is focusing all his efforts on addressing the global climate crisis and working to fix the planet.
