Young people in Da Nang flock to the bay to wade through mud and 'hunt' for razor clams.
TPO - When the tide recedes deeply in Man Quang Bay (Da Nang City), vast mudflats are gradually revealed. This is also the time when many people, especially young people and families, bring plastic buckets, small shovels, and white salt to the bay's edge to experience "hunting" for razor clams – a trend that has been spreading rapidly on social media in recent days.

From early afternoon, the mudflats along Man Quang Bay became bustling. Many people waded through the mud, searching for tiny holes in the surface and pouring salt into the burrows to lure razor clams out of the mud, then quickly catching them. Photo: Duy Quoc According to experiences shared on social media, simply sprinkling a little white salt into the mouth of the burrow can cause razor clams to emerge from the mud after a few seconds. From images circulating online, this trend quickly sparked curiosity among many, especially on days when the tide recedes significantly in the afternoon. The atmosphere in the bay area therefore became more lively than usual. Laughter and chatter mingled with the sound of footsteps wading through mud, creating an unusual scene in this normally quiet estuary.
However, catching razor clams is not as easy as many videos circulating online suggest. The Mân Quang Bay area has a thick layer of mud, with many sections sinking up to the ankles, requiring participants to move slowly and cling to the muddy ground. Their clothes, hands, and feet are covered in pungent mud, but many still enjoy the experience because of its novelty.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Huyen (Hoa Khanh ward) said that after watching many videos online, she and her group of friends decided to try their luck at the bay. “It was mainly for fun. I saw on the internet that people caught a lot of them, so I wanted to try too. But catching them wasn't as easy as I imagined; we spent the whole afternoon searching and only caught a few,” Ms. Huyen said. After a few minutes wading through the mud, many people only managed to gather a few clams and some razor clams. Although most participants only caught a small number of fish, many said the most appealing aspect wasn't the "catch," but the experience of wading through the mud, exploring the unique coastal area, and having fun with friends and family. Many children enjoyed wading in the mud, playfully messing around, and experiencing the lively atmosphere of the bay. According to locals, the mudflats of Man Quang Bay used to be quite deserted, mainly used by people for small-scale fishing to make a living. However, since images of people "hunting" for razor clams went viral on social media, every afternoon the area is crowded with people coming to experience it.
