Spreading culture through games and cultural industries.

At the forum "The Role of Journalism in Promoting the Development of Cultural Industries" held on May 31st in Hai Phong , Dr. Chu Tien Dat, Chairman of the Board of Directors of VTC Corporation, shared a lot of information about the game Black Myth: Wukong (China). Inspired by the novel Journey to the West , the game recreates ancient Chinese architecture, such as the Jade Emperor Temple and the Ten Thousand Buddha Pagoda. "After playing this game, players understand the custom of burning incense. Then they read Journey to the West , and finally they travel to Shanxi Province," said Dr. Chu Tien Dat. The success of the game has led to the success of publishing and tourism.

Black Myth: Wukong also received strong media support. Xinhua News Agency described the game as a "leap forward on the global stage." China Central Television used songs from the Journey to the West TV series for promotion. Simultaneously, platforms like Weibo and streaming services boosted the game's media campaign.

Associate Professor Dang Thi Thu Huong, Vice Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University, Hanoi ), mentioned the powerful mass media system that is bringing the "image of America" to every home. "A child who hasn't even reached school age already knows about America through cartoons like Tom and Jerry . As they grow older, young people are exposed to the entire world of Hollywood films...", Associate Professor Huong said. The same is true for South Korea and Japan. Japanese culture spread to the West through Doraemon comics and Hello Kitty dolls. In South Korea, media is considered a key economic sector with a diverse and abundant range of television channels.

In Vietnam, several television programs have also achieved great success, such as "Brother Overcoming a Thousand Obstacles , " "Brother Says Hi ," etc. Journalist Nguyen Vong Ngan, Head of the Arts and Culture Department of VTV, said: "With 'Brother Overcoming a Thousand Obstacles ,' spin-off shows continue to be produced and sell tickets."

Mr. Le Quoc Minh, Deputy Head of the Central Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Department, Editor-in-Chief of Nhan Dan Newspaper, and President of the Vietnam Journalists Association, is very proud of the special publications that utilize technological effects. Accordingly, historical moments from photographs are recreated into animated images and films, captivating young people. In fact, some editions of Nhan Dan Newspaper have been printed in quantities ten times greater than the number of people filling My Dinh Stadium.

"The other side" of the cultural industry

But the cultural industry is not without its "other side." Journalist Trinh Nguyen ( Thanh Nien Newspaper) argues that when promoting the cultural industry, the press should not forget its role in providing critical feedback. "For example, the Guinness record for the traditional circle dance in Yen Bai could hurt the community of those who are not allowed to participate. This record also contradicts UNESCO's view on culture. According to UNESCO, culture is about diversity, not about winning or losing," journalist Trinh Nguyen said.

When the local authorities were preparing to attempt this record, Thanh Nien was the only newspaper to raise the alarm with the support of cultural experts. Thankfully, although the circle dance was still performed, it was not used to set a new record. While the record might have boosted media attention and tourism, it was a misguided cultural practice.

Associate Professor Dr. Dang Thi Thu Huong believes that while the cultural industry brings significant economic and social value, it still harbors some potential problems, especially in the context of the explosion of technology and artificial intelligence. "The vast amount of information content and diverse mass cultural products, spreading rapidly on social media, have a major impact on the thoughts, spirit, values, and norms of society. Negative, untrue, and fabricated information can cause disruption, insecurity, and even dangerously affect social security," said Dr. Huong.

At the same time, Ms. Huong also warned about the situation where the media purely pursues profit, promoting the cultural industry in a consumerist way, and disregarding traditional values.
