Nearly 2 months after returning to Khanh Binh Tay Bac commune, Tran Van Thoi district, Ca Mau province, many people still clearly remember the poisoning incident that caused a series of people to be hospitalized in critical condition, after which one person died.

Previously, the family of Mrs. TKTh (residing in Khanh Binh Tay Bac commune) held a funeral for a relative. During the 3 days of the funeral, more than 86 liters of alcohol were consumed by hundreds of people. After that, Mr. DVM (born in 1985) returned home and suddenly died. His family believed that he died of illness, so they did not agree to an autopsy to determine the cause. However, according to the authorities, Mr. M. may have died of alcohol poisoning.

Not long after, 7 more people who drank at the funeral also showed symptoms of vomiting, blurred vision, fatigue, etc., so their families took them to Ca Mau General Hospital for treatment. There, the patients were diagnosed with methanol poisoning. The working group took the remaining alcohol purchased for use at the funeral for testing and the rapid test results were positive for methanol.

According to statistics from the functional sector of Ca Mau province, since the beginning of the year, the locality has recorded 3 cases of industrial alcohol poisoning in Tran Van Thoi, Phu Tan and Dam Doi districts. Of these, 3 cases died. "Alcohol poisoning from ethanol is usually milder and has symptoms similar to drunkenness. In particular, poisoning from methanol often has symptoms that appear after 1-2 days of drinking and can lead to dangerous complications. People who drink alcohol with suspected signs of poisoning need to be taken to a medical facility for emergency treatment immediately to limit heartbreaking incidents from happening. When buying alcohol to drink, people must carefully research its origin and source..." - Doctor Khiem advised.

The Chairman of the People's Committee of Ca Mau province also issued an official dispatch directing provincial departments, branches and People's Committees of districts and Ca Mau city to implement measures to prevent and combat alcohol poisoning. Accordingly, the leaders of the Provincial People's Committee directed the Department of Industry and Trade to preside over and coordinate with relevant units to strengthen the management of granting alcohol business licenses; monitor alcohol business conditions and food safety. At the same time, strengthen propaganda and implementation of the law on prevention and combat of alcohol harm according to the functions, tasks and fields of each sector and unit.
