[Video] New advances in technology for identifying martyrs' remains

There are currently about 300,000 unaccounted-for martyrs' graves nationwide and 180,000 remains that need to be collected. With the goal of identifying 20,000 martyrs through DNA testing by 2030, authorities are promoting the application of modern technology and expanding international cooperation to improve the effectiveness of this work.

The DNA Identification Center, Institute of Biology (under the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology), is one of three key units nationwide conducting DNA identification of martyrs' remains according to Decision No. 150/QD-TTg. From 2019 to present, the center has processed about 8,000 samples of remains, developed 13 specialized processes, with a successful extraction rate using mitochondrial DNA technology reaching 22%.

From 2023, the center will coordinate with USAID and ICMP to implement a project to transfer modern technology such as next-generation sequencing (NGS) and SNP marker analysis, helping to increase accuracy and expand the ability to match with distant relatives of both paternal and maternal lines. Test results show that the matching rate reaches 70/100 samples, more than three times higher than the old technology.
