Regarding musical instruments, the Thai ethnic group has various types of pi (pi pap, pi thiu, pi tam lay...), khen be, tinh tau, drums, and gongs. The Mong ethnic group has flutes, khenes, and jew's harps. The Kho Mu ethnic group has linh cymbals, monkey gongs, hun may, and tang bang. The Muong people have pi le, drums, cymbals, and gongs. The Dao people have bells, trumpets, and...

Folk songs are also very rich and diverse, such as: All songs, love duet songs, and han khuong songs of the Thai people; lullabies, and mourning songs of the Mong people, or pao dung songs of the Dao people... Although there are differences in melody, lyrics, and performance forms, folk songs all have content that aims at good values, promoting the spirit of work, creativity, the meaning of life, behavior between people, between people and nature, praising love, the beauty of the homeland, villages... Folk music of all ethnic groups not only has artistic value, but is also a driving force to help people love life more, work enthusiastically in production, and build their homeland.

Meritorious artist Lu Hong Xua, who is considered a "big tree" in the art of playing and making Khen Be in Muong Vat, Yen Chau, shared: Music is considered the soul in the cultural life of the Thai ethnic community. Nowadays, folk music has changed a lot, Thai ethnic people perform xoe dances and singing on new and vibrant electronic music. However, our generation always strives for traditional values and strives to teach our children how to play Khen Be, blow pi, and play gongs, so that the national cultural values will live forever.

Faced with the challenges of the times for traditional culture, Son La province has implemented many solutions to promote national cultural identity, especially folk music. In 2022, the Provincial People's Committee issued the Project "Preserving and promoting the values of folk songs, folk dances, and folk music of ethnic minorities in Son La province associated with tourism development" for the period 2022-2030, with 8 tasks.
