A study published in the scientific journal PNAS suggests that it might be possible to hang an umbrella or shield on an asteroid to block sunlight.

István Szapudi, an astronomer at the University of Hawaii's Astronomy Institute, explains that this solution could help mitigate climate change in the future. According to the research, the umbrella could shield the planet from 1.7% of the sun's rays, slowing down global warming. The problem is that current rockets aren't powerful enough to carry such a large shield into space. If this problem is solved, the next step would be to select an asteroid that can orbit Earth, carrying the sun-blocking umbrella.
In 2022, a team of researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US announced the idea of sending a giant "bubble" into space, positioned between Earth and the Sun. Theoretically, it would be large enough to deflect sunlight away from the planet, thereby slowing down some of the effects of global warming.
