On January 6, information from Buon Ma Thuot City Police said that they were temporarily detaining Tran Quoc Vu (23 years old, residing in Nam N'Jang commune, Dak Song district, Dak Nong province) for defrauding more than 400 people of over 7 billion VND for online gambling.
Previously, the Cyber Security Department of Dak Lak Provincial Police and Buon Ma Thuot City Police received reports from many people about being tricked into selling goods on Facebook and then having their money stolen.
Using many professional measures, the police force quickly arrested Tran Quoc Vu.
After being arrested, Vu confessed that because he needed money to spend and gamble online, he had the idea of "fraudulently appropriating property".
To carry out the act, Vu went online to contact a person named "Nhi Xinh" with unknown identity and background to "launder money".
Vu's trick, after successfully defrauding, would instruct the victim to transfer money to "Nhi Xinh's" account number. Vu agreed to pay "Nhi Xinh" 10% of the amount of money stolen.
After that, Vu uploaded pictures of furniture and household appliances online and bought fake Facebook accounts to post about selling these items on groups.
After receiving a text message asking to buy, Vu asked the customer to transfer a deposit to the account numbers provided by “Nhi Xinh”. Upon receiving the money, Vu immediately blocked contact, appropriated it, and used it for online gambling.
With that trick, from January 2023 to now, Vu has defrauded more than 400 people in many provinces and cities, appropriating over 7 billion VND.
