Baby boy born with 6 umbilical cords wrapped around his neck. |
At around 8:00 a.m. on August 29, pregnant woman TLN (born in 2005, residing in Dong Le commune) showed signs of labor at the 40th week of pregnancy.
“During her pregnancy, the pregnant woman N. was examined regularly, so the umbilical cord was discovered early. We assessed that it was not dangerous, so we instructed the pregnant woman to closely monitor herself at home. During labor, the pregnant woman was continuously monitored to promptly handle any unexpected events,” said Dr. Hoang Van Toan, Head of the Obstetrics Department, Tuyen Hoa Regional General Hospital.

At 3 p.m. the same day, the mother gave birth naturally to a baby boy weighing 2.7 kg. When the baby was born, the team was surprised to discover that the umbilical cord was wrapped around the baby's neck 6 times. The good news is that despite being wrapped around so many times, the baby's health is stable, with rosy skin and good breastfeeding.
“Previously, the ultrasound only showed the umbilical cord wrapped 3-4 times, but when the baby was born, the umbilical cord was wrapped 6 times. This is a rare case, because normally the umbilical cord wrapped many times around the neck can be dangerous for the fetus. Luckily this time the baby was safe. After birth, the baby and the mother N. recovered quickly and their health was stable,” added Dr. Toan.
According to Dr. Hoang Van Toan, according to medical literature, one in three babies are born with the umbilical cord wrapped around their neck, but usually only 1-2 times. The case of a newborn with the umbilical cord wrapped 6 times like this time is very rare.
“Pregnant women should have regular check-ups to promptly detect abnormalities that may affect the fetus, including the condition of the umbilical cord wrapped around the neck. An umbilical cord wrapped around the neck multiple times can cause the fetus’s head to bow poorly, hindering the normal birth process. This condition is often detected through ultrasound. Pregnant women should not worry too much, just monitor closely, because in many cases, the umbilical cord can untie itself when the fetus turns,” Dr. Toan advised.
