At approximately 8:00 AM on August 29th, pregnant woman TLN (born in 2005, residing in Dong Le commune) showed signs of labor at 40 weeks of pregnancy.
“During her pregnancy, Ms. N. underwent regular check-ups, which led to the early detection of the umbilical cord wrapping around her neck. We assessed it as not dangerous and instructed her to monitor herself closely at home. During labor, she was continuously monitored to promptly address any unexpected situations,” said Dr. Hoang Van Toan, Head of the Obstetrics Department at Tuyen Hoa Regional General Hospital.

At 3 PM that same day, the mother gave birth naturally to a baby boy weighing 2.7 kg. Upon birth, the medical team was surprised to discover the umbilical cord was wrapped six times around the baby's neck. Thankfully, despite the multiple wraps, the baby's health remained stable, his skin was rosy, and he was feeding well.
“Previously, the ultrasound only showed the umbilical cord wrapped around 3-4 times, but at birth, the baby had the cord wrapped around 6 times. This is a rare case, because normally, multiple wraps of the umbilical cord around the neck can be dangerous for the fetus. Fortunately, the baby is safe this time. After birth, both the baby and the mother, N., recovered quickly and their health is stable,” added Dr. Toan.
According to Dr. Hoang Van Toan, medical literature indicates that one in three newborns have the umbilical cord wrapped around their neck, but usually only 1-2 times. Cases of newborns with the umbilical cord wrapped around their necks as much as 6 times, like this one, are extremely rare.
“Pregnant women should have regular check-ups to promptly detect any abnormalities that may affect the fetus, including the umbilical cord wrapping around the neck. Multiple loops of the umbilical cord can cause the baby's head to be improperly positioned, hindering normal delivery. This condition is usually detected through ultrasound. Pregnant women shouldn't worry too much; they just need to be closely monitored, because in many cases, the umbilical cord can untangle itself when the fetus turns,” Dr. Toan advised.
