The Republic of Molossia was first established in 1977 as the Grand Goldstein Republic before changing to its current name.
"Molossia is actually a variation of the Hawaiian word 'maluhia' which means harmony and peace ," President Kevin Baugh and founder of the micronation told The Sun.
The Republic of Molossia was established in 1977 as the Grand Republic of Goldstein.
The tiny nation - not recognised by the United Nations - has a population of fewer than 40 people, most of whom do not live on its land.
Baugh said there are only three people and three dogs living in the country, which is located in Dayton, Nevada. His wife, the First Lady, and his 20-year-old daughter, who is the sheriff, live there.
The President stands next to the country's flag
His daughter, who was not named, traveled on behalf of Molossia to interact with other micronations in Canada, Mexico and Europe.
"It gives my daughter a broader perspective on life than I think many people have," the President said.
Molossia is located near the California-Nevada border in Dayton.
Additionally, oddly enough, the fact that the nation appears to be near the Nevada-California border also has some odd rules, including Baugh's full title: Mr. President, Colonel Admiral, Dr. Kevin Baugh, President and Raïs of Molossia, Protector of the Fatherland and Defender of the People.
Residents and visitors of this land are prohibited from bringing onions, spinach, catfish and walrus into the country.
"Onions are not allowed because I don't like onions - and I'm a dictator so I can say things like that. When you break the rules and bring catfish into our country, you go to jail. We just like to do things that are different, unique and eccentric in our country," Baugh told the British newspaper.
Tiny country not recognised by the United Nations - home to fewer than 40 people, most of whom do not live here
Baugh told the Washington Post that they only had to jail a few people, but it was mainly used to "briefly imprison tourists who were bringing contraband into Molossia."
“It's amazing how many people are happy to be thrown in jail in a third world country,” he said.
The entire country was founded out of an empty desert, something Baugh says he is very proud of.
“I am very proud of what I have created. There was nothing there before we moved in and declared it our country. It was just empty desert,” he stressed.
Visitors to Molossia can still get their passports stamped
Although not recognized as a country, Molossian visitors can still get their passports stamped! And they are working towards becoming a fully sovereign nation.
“Although we are not yet recognized by other established nations, we are working on that!” he added.
Inside the Micro Country in the Heart of America
As for the best part of living in the country, Baugh says, “Micro-nations are extensions of imagination and creativity. We take full advantage of that as we build and develop the great Republic of Molossia!”
