Secrets to Forming and Running an Orchestra

The book launch took place this morning, October 15th, at the Ho Chi Minh City Book Street (Nguyen Van Binh Street, District 1).

"The Art of Conducting Orchestras and Choirs" and "Joyful Harmony" are two works by Dr. Nguyen Bach, published by Dong Hanh Art in collaboration with the Vietnam Women's Publishing House and the Ho Chi Minh City General Publishing House. The books provide readers with some basic knowledge about conducting choirs, vocal groups, and orchestras.

Currently, Vietnamese-language materials on conducting are quite scarce, so many people who have conducted church or school choirs, or who want to enter the field of conducting, lack study materials. Therefore, this book is an essential resource in the field of orchestral conducting.

The book consists of three parts. Part I: General Conducting Techniques, presents issues related to conducting techniques that have been systematized according to international standards, such as: posture while conducting, charts guiding the playing of different rhythms with non-espressivo, espressivo, molto espressivo-legato, staccato, marcato techniques, techniques for starting and ending, the "hot stove" technique, techniques for expressing intensity, techniques for using the left hand, techniques for marking parts, etc.

Part II: Choral Conducting addresses issues related to choirs, from establishing or restructuring choirs, to arranging and organizing rehearsals, and to training methods.

In addition, the book provides guidance on analyzing musical pieces, outlining criteria for assessing the value of a piece of music, helping choir conductors understand the elements to evaluate a musical piece before deciding which one to perform.

The launch event left a strong impression with its live performance.

Part III: Orchestral Conducting addresses the concept of musical instruments, types of orchestras, and orchestral arrangement. The purpose of this section is to familiarize readers with the types of musical instruments and the seating arrangements of musicians in an orchestra, so they will not be surprised when they have the opportunity to conduct a choir or orchestra.

In addition to the main content, there are appendices to further support learners, especially Appendix 3, "Symbol Lookup" and Appendix 4, "List of Figures and Diagrams Related to Command Techniques". These two appendices were not included in the previous edition.
