Military Symphony Orchestra – MSO begins operations

The Army Symphony Orchestra, part of the Military University of Culture and Arts, has a scale of 3 extended chambers, with strings, percussion, woodwinds, brass and electronic instruments, equivalent to the orchestras of Austria, France and Germany; the number of musicians is 101 people along with leaders, conductors, assistants and staff. Lieutenant Colonel, musician Do Bao is the Director of the Army Symphony Orchestra.

On November 21, in Hanoi, the Military University of Culture and Arts held a ceremony to announce the Ministry of National Defense ’s Decision on the establishment of the Military Symphony Orchestra – MSO. This event marked a major step forward for the Military University of Culture and Arts in its 70 years of artistic activities.

According to Decision No. 5399/QD-BQP, dated October 26, 2025 of the Minister of National Defense, the Military Symphony Orchestra was officially established, English name: Military Symphony Orchestra (abbreviated as MSO) under the management of the Military University of Culture and Arts.

The Army Symphony Orchestra has a scale of 3 extended chambers, with strings, percussion, woodwinds, brass and electronic instruments, equivalent to the orchestras of Austria, France and Germany; the number of musicians is 101 people along with a framework of leaders, conductors, assistants and staff.

Lieutenant Colonel, musician Do Bao (formerly Head of the Composition Department of the Faculty of Music, University of Military Culture and Arts) was appointed as Director of the Army Symphony Orchestra. Lieutenant Colonel, musician Nguyen An Hieu (formerly Deputy Head of the Faculty of Cultural Management) was appointed and Major, singer Vu Thang Loi (formerly an actor and singer of the Military Region 2 Art Troupe) was appointed as Deputy Director.

The organization of the staffing continues to be assigned to the Military University of Culture and Arts to gradually select and report on the finalization of the number. Currently, the school has a team of talented lecturers and musicians trained at home and abroad; many artists of the school have recently regularly participated in collaborating and staging many major symphonic and classical programs of the country and the Army such as: People's Artist Nguyen Xuan Bac, musicians Do Bao, Mai Kien, Duc Tan, Cao Dinh Thang...

In addition, the school closely connects with the Vietnam Union of Literature and Arts Associations and the Vietnam Musicians Association to provide professional advice as well as orientation in both expertise and personnel. Along with preparing forces and organizing staff, the Military University of Culture and Arts prepares to purchase equipment and musical instruments that are synchronous, suitable, and in the most professional and modern direction in the world today.

In his congratulatory speech and assignment to the Army Symphony Orchestra, Colonel, musician Ho Trong Tuan, Principal of the Army University of Culture and Arts, emphasized that the Army Symphony Orchestra has the function of performing professional symphonic music of the Army; training and fostering symphony musicians for the Army and the country; and is a bridge of cultural and artistic exchange between the Army and the people and international friends.

The Orchestra's mission is to perform domestic and international classical and contemporary symphonic works for soldiers and people; provide training and professional development; serve important political ceremonies and events of the Army and the State; participate in domestic and international cultural and artistic exchange programs; and promote international cooperation in the field of music.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Lieutenant Colonel, musician Do Bao, Director of the Army Symphony Orchestra, said that with a deep understanding of the assigned functions and tasks, the Army Symphony Orchestra, with its pioneering and dedicated spirit, will continue and further promote the glorious tradition of the Army University of Culture and Arts over the past 70 years, determined to build and develop in a professional, specialized direction, meeting regional and international standards. MSO strives to gradually bring Army music closer to domestic and foreign audiences; through the environment of symphonic, academic, and modern music; spread and promote the good image of the Army, the country, and the people of Vietnam while improving the cultural and spiritual life of officers, soldiers, and people, thereby preserving, conserving, and promoting the traditional cultural values ​​of the heroic Army in the flow of Vietnamese revolutionary art, contributing to building an advanced Vietnamese culture with a strong national identity.

Regarding development strategy, MSO promotes cooperation with domestic and international chamber symphony orchestras; quickly consolidates and arranges the organization and staff; actively and proactively builds facilities, equipment, and musical instruments for practice and performance; develops music programs and projects, and strategies for organizing the Orchestra's activities in a modern, academic direction integrated with national traditions.
