Ministry of Public Security outlines cases that must switch to ID cards from July 1

According to the provisions of the Law on Identification, some cases will have to change from CCCD card to ID card from July 1.

According to , from July 1, 2024, citizens are not required to change from valid citizen identification cards (CCCD) to ID cards. However, there will still be some cases where it is necessary to change from CCCD cards to ID cards.

Some cases must change to ID cards from July 1.

Cases where it is mandatory to change to ID card from July 1

Citizen identification cards issued before the effective date of the Law on Identification (ie before July 1) are valid until the expiration date printed on the card, except in cases specified in regulations. Citizens who have a need can be issued a replacement for an identification card.

ID cards that are still valid after December 31, 2024 will be valid until December 31, 2024. Legal documents that have been issued using information from ID cards and CCCDs will retain their validity; state agencies are not allowed to request citizens to change or adjust information about ID cards and CCCDs in issued documents.

CCCD and ID cards that expire from January 15, 2024 to before June 30, 2024 will continue to be valid until June 30, 2024.

Thus, from July 1, if the CCCD card expires, citizens are required to switch to an ID card.

Cases of issuance, re-issuance of ID cards

Article 24 of the Law on Identification stipulates cases of reissuance of identification cards, including:

- Vietnamese citizens who have been issued an ID card must carry out procedures to renew their ID card when they reach the age of 14, 25, 40 and 60.

- Change, correct information about last name, middle name, birth name; date of birth.

- Change identity; add information about facial photo, fingerprints; re-identify gender or change gender according to the provisions of law.

- There is an error in the information printed on the ID card.

- At the request of the person issued the ID card when the information on the ID card changes due to administrative unit arrangement.

- Reset personal identification number.

- When the person granted the identity card requests it.

In addition, cases of re-issuance of ID cards include: Lost ID card or damaged ID card that cannot be used, except in cases prescribed by regulations; regaining Vietnamese nationality according to regulations of the law on Vietnamese nationality.
