On the afternoon of January 3rd, the Indonesian Football Federation (PSSI) officially announced on its website that John Herdman is the new head coach of the national team. PSSI described the appointment of Coach John Herdman as "marking the beginning of a new era for national football".
PSSI signed coach John Herdman to a 2+2 year contract. His salary was not disclosed. Coach John Herdman will be in charge of both the Indonesian national team and the Indonesian U23 team.
Coach John Herdman, born in 1975, is an English national. He is notable for being the only coach to have led both the Canadian men's and women's national teams to qualify for the World Cup.
With the Canadian women's national team, Herdman led the team to the 2007 and 2011 World Cups. He made history by winning two consecutive Olympic bronze medals in football in 2012 and 2016.
With the Canadian men's national team, Herdman helped them qualify for the 2022 World Cup and climb the FIFA rankings from 77th to 33rd in the world at that time.
After failing to materialize their ambition of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup with coaches Shin Tae Yong (South Korea) and Patrick Kluivert (Netherlands), PSSI turned its attention to John Herdman (English coach), hoping to lead a squad of naturalized Dutch stars to conquer their continental and World Cup dreams.
PSSI President Erick Thohir emphasized: "This is the moment Indonesian football enters a new era with a coach of World Cup caliber."
