Maguire's police assault case is about to be cleared up. |
The Manchester United midfielder's retrial is scheduled to begin this Wednesday in Syros, Greece. This is the fourth time in nearly half a decade that the case has been brought and postponed. According to Mail Sport , Maguire was not present in court, but his legal team is ready to clear his name. The case has been postponed several times due to conflicting lawyer schedules, strikes by Greek lawyers and complicated administrative procedures.
Maguire was convicted of assaulting a police officer and attempting to bribe a police officer after a brawl on the island of Mykonos in 2020, resulting in a 21-month suspended sentence. However, under Greek law, the sentence is automatically overturned on appeal, forcing a retrial at a higher level. The case has been pending ever since.
In a 2020 interview with BBC Sport , Maguire maintained his innocence, claiming the group of men who attacked him were not wearing police uniforms, leading him to believe he was being kidnapped. "My conscience is clear. I know exactly what happened that night," Maguire said.
Once the most expensive captain in MU history, Maguire has gone through a long period of decline and lost his place in the England team under coach Thomas Tuchel. He is currently on holiday with his family.
The trial in Syros is seen as the final turning point in a messy chapter in Maguire’s career. Whatever the outcome, the possibility of ending the case after five years of criminal charges is undoubtedly a great relief for the 31-year-old defender and his family.
